Daf xf105.510 oil

Can anyone help/advise please. We run several XF105.510’s but one of them seems to use an excessive amount of engine oil.

Any ideas please?

Sounds like a damaged engine…head gasket ( check the rad for oil )…does it smoke…then needs a garage, could be piston rings…the head…any number of things…but needs an inspection. I know the old 2800 used to like a drop of oil, some used more oil than diesel  …but not known an xf to use lots of oil.

What year is it, and what mileage has it done?
Early versions of the MX engine developed a prodigious thirst for oil at a low mileage, I think it was a piston ring issue. I believe it was sorted out on later models, and anything newer than 2011 should be ok.
How much is it using per thousand ks or so?

Swap to Volvo■■?

Official way was to jack cab fill oil to max and run it until the dash said oil low, record miles then add another 5 litres and so on then after a few times contact Daf and they would work out whether it needed the updated rebuild kit fitted.
If you speak to your Daf dealer they will know all about it.

Thanks all, Year 2011 10Ltrs approx every 4500 miles! No smoking, no oil in rad. Total mls 240732.

It needs a set of pistons and liners, or rings at the least. In the short term I’d drop the oil, send off a sample for a proper oil analysis, this will tell you how far you need to go in the rebuild and add a couple of gallons of Lucas oil stabilizer to the oil when you fill it back up. This will increase its viscosity and reduce oil consumption a little.

Bah piffling amount. You’d have been putting a gallon in an old Gardner every 450 miles.

That’s fairly high consumption by modern standards, but not catastrophic. It looks like approx one gallon a week. By comparison, the last few Scanias and Volvos I’ve had have used very little oil almost regardless of mileage.
I’d just keep running it whilst monitoring it carefully and take my chances on it running on for a good while yet. Even on a good day, it won’t be worth a lot at that age, and if it does need a piston and liner rebuild it might well not be viable to do.

Could be an oil control ring thats causing problems, worn turbo seals, valve stem oil seals ect or just an oil leak somewhere thats been missed on an inspection ie turbo oil return pipe, rear crank seal ect. have it in the workshop to check for an obvious leak and if nothing found have a compression test done and check for piston/ring blow by…

I would say take it to the garage and let the experts deal with it. Running a fleet of DAFs with no maintenance, seems a little odd that this is left to a driver to diagnose on a forum rather than ask the mechanics who do your regular maintenance what is wrong.

I may repeat what others have said …Early MX engines did have oil consumptions ,your engine will be of the latest type …The fix was basically valve guide oil seals ,and a new liner with an anti polishing ring in it …I will take it for granted that it isn’t spewing oil out of every oil seal ,As trickydicky said ,if you take it to a dealer ,though a lot depends on staff retention a they may not have a clue…But they will top up your oil to the MAX note the milage and give you a printed piece of A4 ,every time the low oil light comes on you add 5 litres of the correct oil,you do this 3 times if my memory serves me correctly ,you also have to make a note of your fuel consumption ,as fuel consumption is relative to oil consumption ,after a not so quick maths exam ,then you will know if you have an issue or not …As the kits for the early engines are no longer available ,it would be an expensive at minimum 6 liners ,not forgetting the liner O rings ad the special lubricant for them ,6 sets of rings ,head gasket set valve stem oil seals and a set of valve springs ,can not remember if it was inlet or exhaust.6 oil nozzels .O rings for the oil module .water pump gasket ,filters and oil,not forgetting labour …So it isn’t a cheap job…Since your engine will already have the anti polishing rings ,I have only say 1 engine with them fitted with an issue …Customer used a SCANIA dealer when his turbo blew ,who then towed it to us when it wouldn’t start, and when it did start it had horrendous back pressure …Was an odd customer we serviced the rigids (DAF) and Scania did the DAF tractor units
