DAF SSC CB mount

A friend of mine has a SSC XF, and doesn’t like the standard factory antenna that is situated on the back of the cab, as it is too short to be effective, given the height of the aforementioned truck, but saying as it’s only 18 months old, and is a lease truck, his gaffer won’t allow him to modify the bodywork/change the mount.

So his dilemma is, he want’s his cb to get out better, but is limited as to what to do. He also says that the SSC XF is crap as a ground plane because of the lack of metal at the back of the cab, his words, not mine.

Has anyone used an antenna that will fit on the standard mount, but is big enough to get over the top of the cab, or should he forget about it and go mirror mount?

One must also remember that as well as the back of the cab, a trailer will also mask the signal to some degree, hence the idea of a taller antenna.

We changed the twig when we had 95xf,s so just tipped over trl height
Was more effective cant move mount higher as top of cab not metal

Also could get a burner (amp) that will give it thT bit extra to

Yes that’s what he said about the top of the cab, hence the question, and as for a ‘burner’, well that’s fine, but as it’s an amp, it only pushes signal out, but doesn’t help on receive.

And being a fully licenced radio ham, I couldn’t condone amps on cb…

Ken.

Gaffer tape a piece if tin to the roof. Mag mount and run a coax ground plane to the existing twig. Not sure if that would work but it’ll cost you ■■■■ all to try it

If you read again asked if anyone used a bigger twig
And yes we did on our old s reg xf 95’s
We only had it tipped over the trl height as running in euro
And less wires and messing about with mirror mounts
And only confirmed about top that his mate told him

The std twig was crap even with couple of us running togeather
Bit of distance inbetween and they were a crackle in the back of box
But they could here us with bigger twig (no burner)
Cant remember what twig was called but had coil at bottom which seamed to help

Wilson is the way forward with twigs but those stingers you’re in about are a good budget twig

He’s correct. It is the amount of metal directly under the antenna, not alongside it that counts.

Also when you look at where its mounted, the person who designed it to go there obviously has no understanding at all about antennas. I’m surprised any antenna placed there tunes in at all and it comes as no surprise they don’t work well.

The aerial sounds like the Stinger/Springer/Orbiter.
The full sized one is quite reasonable. The centre loaded version is more efficient but costs a bit more.

Ken, that truck’s mount, is it the standard 3/8" mount or is it something else?

Yup, the standard 3/8" mount.

Ken.

Well that makes things very simple. Apart from some Sirios, just about any Chip Butty aerial will fit, Ken.
The rest I will leave in your safe capable hands
