this is the only part of the truck to rust because it is made from steel (yes just like the rest of the truck & yes it is painted to the same thickness) that is in more of a direct line of stone chips and other road debris than other parts of the cab/ truck.
As to why the driver simply doesnt but a coat of stonechip resist paint on it - they type you get from halfords i dodnt know maybe its a company thing or a driver care thing there but yes the story goes that its down to it position on the truck & its greater amount of abuse so ive been told by my mates at a DAF dealer

Seems to be that DAF are the only ones that have a steel bumper in this age. All other trucks have plastic bumpers with a steel box section behind. I had an XF which seemed to be ok as it was red so the rust didnt show as bad as a white bumper. Plus I would always polish the bumper on my unit. But the stone chips are a problem as its that close to the road.
