Have an 18t GVW version of one of these at work with a concrete mixer body.
I’m supposed to take 5 cubic meters of concrete in the morning and I reckon I’ll be overweight, bossman says no but I did some digging
If the mixer body weighs 3.2t and concrete is 2.4t per cubic meter then its going to be 15.2 tons, plus I suppose 250-500 litres of water in the tank would easily bring it up to 15.5 tons.
So that only leaves 2.5 ton for the rest of the truck, plus the diesel and myself? Surely the truck without the body weighs more than 2.5 ton?
I think the boss is being greedy hoping I wont check, or else I did my maths wrong.
Sick of the place tbh and just looking for an excuse to walk out.
As a good operator they could or should have known its weight when they received it, or at least put it over a weigh bridge with no load. If they have, then they will know exactly how much they can carry.
Little surprised that you have no weigh loader to know how much you have loaded/dropped off., but hey thats how different vehicles weigh so differently.
Thanks for that, good idea. Might take it straight to a weighbridge in the morning. It will already be loaded but at least I can say “I told you so” and if I’m stopped I can say I know I’m overweight I’m going back to the yard to dump some out.

That’s a good operator though
I think he knows its overweight but doesn’t care. The concrete is sold by volume so if you order 5 metres thats what turns up in the truck. If its not used the customer still get charged for 5. Whatever isnt used I bring back to the plant and I look into the drum to guestimate how much is left. If there’s 0.5 cubic metre left and the next guy wants 3 then we just load 2.5 and basically sell 0.5 cubic metres twice
All the concrete firms I have ever dealt with that have had 2 axle / 18t mixers have only ever carried 4m3 as I remember. We have been using one recently, on a DAF chassis as it happens, and he only ever brings 4m3.

Yeah… that’s what i was thinking, but cant remember for sure. Also, the likes of Breedon and Cemex don’t put a full load in anymore either. In case any spills out the back. Breedon would only put 7.5 cube in an eight meter drum for example.
I’ve been driving an LF55 with an 8m flat body on it recently. Unladen weight with driver and full tanks is 6.8t. If you allow 1.5t for the body then the chassis would be around 5.3t.
Yours would be a bit shorter so prob lighter, but not by much.
I collected a load recently, and whilst I was closing my curtains, the owner of the place loaded three (yes, three ) pallets of pop in the Sprinter van… I’ll let that sink in…
The best bit was, that his employee had to keep the service brake down whilst the pallets were pushed in, because the handbrake wouldn’t hold. .
