Daf cf sockets in cab, what are they for? pics included

hi, got a 2003 daf cf (silent nights old outfit) there are 2 extra batteries on the truck. These were dead so i stuck 2batteries in there to see if i could get the socket working in the pod. These is a dropper from 24v to 12v under the bed (see pic) i used a multimeter and it reads 13v from the socket. What is this socket for? obviously normal appliance need 240v from a plug to work. Also there is a small socket to the right of the pic (smaller than a cigarette lighter socket) what is this for etc? i would ideally like to put a tv up there and used the plug socket to power it but how should i do this? also how would i go about an aerial? thanks for all help in advance

see here for dropper and wires :

Yea, I’ve seen this before, it’s just an easy way of providing an extra 12v outlet, and providing you only ever plug the same thing into it, a telly for example, then it works well. Obviously you’ll have to put a mains plug on the telly, so don’t go letting anyone plug it into the mains. :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Hair Straighteners.

CF drivers are like that … HTH

A lot of old caravan transporters had these on the chassis to plug a winch wander lead into, and Van Den Bosch fitted the cabs with two domestic sockets for tv, coffee makers etc

Hi, what do you mean put a mains plug on the telly? Is the standard plug on a telly no good? I tried my mains charger for the phone but it didnt work. How could it if it only puts out 13volts?

Also what is the little hole (socket) in the far right of the photo? Thanks

I think he means putting a mains type plug on your 12v tv, insteed of a din type plug or ciggy lighter type.
I`ve seen people use a house hold type plug like this on fridge cool boxes as they dont get hot the same.
The small round socket is for a din plug, or some times called hella type.

Marsden vanplan who built the pod put them in as standard as they are more robust than a hella plug. I use it to power the 12v tv in mine, just leave it plugged in and switch it on at night.

Sockets and plugs must match.

You can run a 12v supply to a household three-pin socket in a truck, then you can run a 12v appliance from it. You couldn’t operate anything which required a 240v supply just because the socket is usually used as in 240v systems.

Seen it done quite a lot basically it’s a cheapskate alternative to Anderson plugs for high draw 12/24v dc appliances but I think it’s not sensible although I do appreciate that 2x sb50 or sb175 will be the fat part of a tenner.

Also I think for diy installations people think it easier to screw clamp wires in a domestic plug or socket where as an Anderson connector will need crimping (still easily done with an old screwdriver/cold chisel and hammer as an alternative to a pricey pair of crimpers.)

As a safety measure to protect against someone plugging your 12v dc telly etc into a domestic 240v ac socket you could remove the plastic safety cover that is slid down by earth pin (behind the 3 socket holes) - as there’s no risk of a child poking something conducting in. Then cut off the earth pin on the plugs of your 12v dc stuff down to a small stub.

Elf & safety?

To make sure voltages don’t get mixed up, you could always use round pin plugs n sockets for 12 or 24v appliances. Still available at many wholesalers, or online. I used to use them for 12v supply in my shed when I was faddling around with radios.
