Fuel starvation most likely
Fuel pump tired
Fuel filter blocked
Fuel line blockage - had that once (had all threee actually lol), was between where line goes through chassis to fuel filter area

Black smoke is not enough air, white smoke is not enough heat.

Could be a choked cat or silencer but that is normally linked into high engine temperature. If the engine cant “breath” it cant take in the full amount of charge air but the ecu will still inject full fuel delivery. If there is high exhaust back pressure the engine cant scavenge all the previous exhaust gas.

When you apply the exhaust brake the flap shuts but the trigger signal to the injectors is cut so no fuel is supplied and the engine just turns into a big compressor which absorbs energy.Thats why you should get no black smoke if the exhaust brake is working as it should, there is no fuel to burn.

Make sure no leaks on turbo intercooler pipes or leak on intercooler itself can you hear a hissing at all when turbos working

Gurner:
Burn it.

Is the correct answer!!

54 reg 18 tonner started playing up today. the power dropped and no matter what i did, the only thing that the throttle did was kick black smoke out of the exhaust. switched off, started up and it was ok for a few minutes so we suspected the exhaust brake had jammed on (a frequent problem apparently) but it happened again. hadnt used the exhaust brake this time so we pulled over, checked the oil etc, found nothing wrong. i have come across this before but i cant for the life of me remember what the fault is. im sure its an engine component gone wrong. any ideas?

Was it raining when it started doing it if so possible engine ecu mounts worn and rubbed casing through then it gets water ingress causing different faults.

Heheh. Went on a call-out for the same problem years ago. Vehicle was one of those Merc pick-ups - a Dusseldorf? Had a good mooch round under the bonnet and engine cover; eventually found that the driver’s favourite oil-check rag, which he kept in the engine compartment, had been sucked into the air filter!

Er, I know that won’t be the answer here.

This has nothing to do with DAF, but I’ve encountered once situation where exhaust brake mechanism has been faulty and it could randomly jam exhaust brake to on position even when it wasn’t used.

If I don’t remember awfully wrong, black smoke definately hints about lack of oxygen in combustion chamber. This makes me to think there might be something wrong in air intake, maybe time to clean air filter?

I had a problem with the exhaust brake on mine (plastic ball joint broke was the final damage) but when describing the symptons to the mechanic on the phone he came up with two ideas - exhaust brake stuck or turbo blown , fortunately for me it was only a ball joint on the linkage

talk to a mechanic quickly

 Sounds like exhaust brake stuck on alright, but I don’t drive them small ones so never experienced it, on DAF’s. My old 3-series did it a few times though. :frowning:

Burn it.

 I see we’re in a good mood then.

same line of thought as me there Kyrbo. the engine is being choked. i solved the problem on return to base last night anyway as best i could. I DEFECTED IT
