Daf CF cornering

We have a large selection of CF85 in our fleet. Most of them are 4x2. When cornering carrying some speed (nothing outrageous - like coming off a large fast roundabout) them seem to splutter and judder away from the side they are turning and leave a cloud of white exhaust smoke before picking up again.

Is this just a daf thing or what? What causes it?

Its not white exhaust smoke, its smoke off the tyres. If they’re anything like the ones I drive the tyres they came with from DAF are crap, seem to be coated in teflon and lose grip at the slightest thing.

Could it not be the VSC? (VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL)

Give it some more beans, stear into it and crack on!

Sounds like VSC! But Jesus that kicks in far too easily. I end up shouting at it every time it happens because it makes you look like a complete tool on the road!

This is a wind up. It has to be. If not the drivers need to seriously adjust their attitude.

Really? You drive round corners in a manner that causes a safety feature of the vehicle to intervene, and you think your driving is ok? Unless DAF agree that there is a problem with the settings, you need to slow down.

im not talking about throwing the thing round a corner and can absolutely assure you that in these situations i do not need to slow down as a matter of safety. i’d argue the point that when these situations arise, the greatest danger that arises is the sudden slowing of the vehicle to the drivers behind.

thanks for your constructive feedback though donkey

Your doing well our brand new daf cfs are so sluggish from setting of I could read a paper by the time they’ve decided what gear they want to be in.

Yep, you’d never believe the previous 460 manuals and the new euro 6 440s complete with Arsetronic for complete awfulness come from the same maker, chalk and cheese.

Previous 460’s did need decent drive tyres or you would get very easy wheelspin with little or no provocation.

Turn all the safety feature bollox off (their for pansies anyway and should be disabled after gaining 5 years experience of class 1  ), get down to the local Maccy D with the Corsa Club/Skyline/BMW crew and show 'em how it’s done…anyone can do a couple of doughnuts in a car, show some ‘skillz’ and they’ll treat ya like the God you know you are…they’ll be chanting your name for days… TANNNGO, TANNNGO, TANNNGO  :sunglasses:

I absolutely do not throw mine round corners to the point where I need to slow down because if I did it would show up on my Microlise and I would be invited into the office to have a word. I certainly don’t given I spend a lot of time loaded with 27 tonnes of chipboard consisting of six large 4.5 tonne packs. It does it many times as soon as the weight starts to get taken off the inside wheel because the tyres are those stupid eco things which are rock hard and have no grip. They’re so hard a compound that we’re getting 300,000km out of a set of drive axle tyres with the front steering ones looking at getting 400k.

I had my Mazda MX5 do the same with the tyres the place I bought it from fitted which were the cheapest Kwik Fit sold. Now its got some proper grippy tyres the DSC no longer kicks in.

No idea what they’ve done in the 18 months since we got our first Euro 6s on 64 plates but the 16 plate ones we’ve got are terrible in comparison. Climbing up Stainmore on the A66 they’re not changing down until they’re below 1000RPM and you’re ending up doing 10MPH slower than the 64 plates with 250,000km more on the clock. Then there’s the engine brake. It used to be on a stalk on the right and you tapped it down and it stayed on until you accelerated. Now its a 3 position stalk that doesn’t disengage and sits there with the dashboard screaming at you telling you its still on when you pull off.

so conor, are you finding the same thing?
