D4 five yearly medical

Well, there’s a result… Last week I received a form to renew my photo license and one of the options was to go to my local main post office to have it done there, an option I took up as it’s quick easy and error free… My new photo license arrived today and I was checking the back of it to make sure all of my truck entitlements were on it and I noticed my entitlements are valid up until 2021. I telephoned DVLA to find out why my 5 year medical application form had not been sent out and she very insistently told me that due to an EU directive my entitlements are valid and correct and do not require the medical… I have also checked online and it seems this is the case… Makes you wonder what’s going on especially after the bin truck driver incident in Glasgow… Has anyone else heard of this? :astonished: :astonished: :astonished:

Just checked online again and there was a thread on trucknet three years ago on this subject. Seems like it’s a bit of a loophole and legit which has saved my a good wedge of cash…

Yes it’s great isn’t it…

Except I know of at least one driver who has been very grateful of this loophole because there isn’t a doctor in the country who would pass him as fit to ride a pushbike, let alone drive a truck. So he changed his licence picture purely to get this loophole medical extension.

So here he is now, happily plodding along the roads of this great nation of ours, with about 25% normal vision, for another 5 years without a care in the world, while the rest of us hope his next accident only involves himself and not some innocent bystander he couldn’t see !!

Have you reported this driver to DVLA ? - if not then why not ?

Unless we report drivers we suspect of being unfit to drive to the authorities then we must also accept responsibility for any incident they cause

My medical was due this September. Went online, £14 to change the photo using the one on my passport (which happens to actually be the same photo already on my licence) and my new licence arrived 4 days later with medical now due 2021.

It does seem rather a strange idea from a safety point of view as I have clearly avoided my medical at 52 years old which makes no sense. Fortunately I don’t actually use my licence.

I can’t be too long before the DVLA put a stop to it, I know of people who have had they’re car licence revoked for 12 months for a seizure, and any vocational entitlement gone for 10 years.

Someone who scraped through the last time can and do renew close to the date, who would be liable should god forbid we have another incident like Glasgow, I would be the last person to see someone lose their livelihood, I see the shape of some people driving trucks and it makes you wonder how they get away with it.

It must be a real worry for some every time that form comes through the door, a motivating factor for maintaining good health should you need it.

They won’t need to “put a stop to it”, as the number of licence holders eligible to take advantage of the change in legislation reduces to zero over the next couple of years.

just because people are portly, doesn’t mean that they’re not fit! :grimacing: I know three lads who were green slime, Irish Rangers and engineers who passed selection to the regiment. :sunglasses: they could run all day and night up Brecon no problem, so don’t assume, fother of all muckups and all that! anyone see the sun news paper Friday? That’s my son £1,000,000 richer and staying in! Good lad

Why does everyone feel the need to be policemen now,is it because we have a shortage of real policemen or have people nothing better to do.Why would you want to lose someone their livliehood and screw their lives up on a suspicion, why not have a quiet word with the driver instead or get yourself a hobby and let us workers get on with it,thank you.

If a driver did not get reported and was unfit to drive then killed a loved one of yours … thats ok with you

This loophole has been on the go for a while now, I renewed my photo at the beginning of 2015 and got an extra 4 years on my entitlement, but with me being in central Scotland and the bin lorry tragedy still quite raw round about here I decided I would get a check up any way. So when i hit the big 5 0 in the summer I got myself down the health centre and got one of those man mot’s and to be honest it was probably more detailed than any hgv medical would ever have been and it was completely free.
