cyclists

If you don’t cycle on the roads you have no idea what it’s like these days.

So why do it■■?

Because I can, because it keeps me fitter than I would be by driving to work, because I enjoy cycling so why not?

BillyHunt:
My bad, sorry for butting in on your monthly anti cycling love fest.

obviously you must be a cyclist,if you were witness to it you would also have agreed she was lucky not to have been seriously injured or killed,if I am wrong in any way I allways admit it because sooner or later whatever you do will catch you up,i do not slate cyclists for any reason other than being unsafe which she was,

I’ve got this theory that some of them, probably a small minority, are banned drivers, DD, tot-ups, whatever, and they ain’t happy…

Me coats on, taxi’s on its way…

In the scheme of things truck drivers have a purpose and cyclists are just a nuisance.

indeed

Oops my bad, quite right- theres cycle couriers, midwives and onion sellers

I am a cyclist in as much as I have a bike, and I bike to work, I’m not in a club or wear Lycra, I’m more of the hi viz jacket & work boot type. I’ve no problem with you, or anyone, relating stories of near misses, I’ve seen plenty myself. It’s the follow ups that make me laugh, they all jump red lights, they shouldn’t be on the roads etc blah blah from people that haven’t been on a bike for years, see the odd incident and suddenly all cyclists are spawn of the devil put on the road to annoy truckers.
It’s not as if all drivers are perfect is it? Cyclists aren’t idiots & drivers aren’t idiots, it’s people, people are idiots.

Dipper_Dave:
Occupational hazard I’m afraid, although I’m surpised the squashed cyclist isn’t more of a common site treat them all with extra caution as the PC, pro-cycling, I have a bike and I know what I’m doing brigade will be on your casein a heart beat.

I save a cyclists life at least once a week

Just use the mantra that a cyclist always has right of way (as the more vunerable road user) and life will run smoother…

By that logic truck users would have to treat car users exactly the same. The fact is what you are suggesting is just carte blanche for priorities to be reversed on an arbitrary basis of so called ‘vulnerability’ levels. Not the accepted rules of the road, road markings and traffic signals. With the inevitable result of dangerous anarchy on the roads. While at the same time just adding to the dangers of the situation whereby too many cyclists are already applying those dangerous rules of the road on a unilateral basis anyway. :unamused:

agree with that

Should i label all truck drivers after one forced me off the road this week and left me with a bill of £400 for new wheels - luckily i can claim on my cycle insurance. I’m an ex LGV driver and have undergone additional bikesafe training.

He/she is now the reason my bike and helmet now being fitted with front and rear cameras - at the very least i can get a reg and company name.

This isn’t the first time and beginning to think some drivers enjoy doing this and going off a lot of the comments on this site in general it seems to be the case.

For trucknet CSI i was on a straight road with no oncoming traffic. No cycle lane and i don’t ride in the gutter. Initially they gave me a wide pass but them moved right in on me when level with drive wheels on unit - could still see road ahead so knew no traffic and no side roads. Either moved on me for kicks or doing something in cab to lose attention - bad which ever way you look at it.

Done with it now - i ride for fun and health - i stop at reds - and as every book on cycling states i never put myself in the nearside dead zone of LGV/PCV at junctions

Just persuade everyone else that cycles to do the same and these threads will stop…

All road user groups have idiots in them. But the ones that are the most vulnerable are the ones that are perceived as being the daftest for taking any risks.

It’s got to be a unanimous attempt to keep everyone safe. The trouble with the cycling lobby is, they are very much a ‘them and us’ set up. This sets up a hostility, which ironically is one of the things they are trying to avoid.

Until it becomes a concerted effort between all parties, it will remain a ‘them and us’.

Attitudes are hard to change.

Probably didn’t phrase it well but was point i was trying to make - all groups have idiots !!

Camera is for hopefully getting my money back if knocked off again - and that’s all vehicles not just LGV. Don’t see point in most videos on youtube etc.

I do try change attitudes of other cyclists but awareness and training needed in all groups. I still drive but not professionally - i just found that 95% of my journeys could be done by bike.
Now found my awareness of others has changed for the better since i started cycling again.

the post about being ran off the road and causing you £400 quids worth of damage and having a reg and a company to claim off , i understand what your saying but what about the other way round when a cyclist causes damage and just rides off totally untracable, do you supprt the fact that cyclist should have a reg plate or id marker for the exact same reasons that damage is caused by cyclists yet most just think ■■■■ em and ride off, one of our driver swerved to miss a wreckless cyclist last year, the video footage was 1 second and 2 inches away as being used a road safety footage, the swerve and hard brake caused £30,000 worth of damge to the stock on the back and the cyclist just rode off waving, yes you have the right to use the road but you should also be accountable for your action and have insurance identifying marks and a license type system, only then will it discourage some of the wreckless behaviour seen on the roads stop

Personally yes i would welcome some kind if id scheme - it is to easy to hide for some - it needs commitment from the powers that be which i cant see happening

Nope, but i can see how you would read too much into this idea, probably me poor phrasing has a lot to do with it.
The rules of the road are great if everyone drove to them but unfortunately we are only human and mistakes happen and arrogance / poor understanding may influence decisions and put lives in danger.
Basing priorities on vunerability is flawed but giving a vunerable road users a bit of extra allowance / space saves lives and more importantly paperwork

I’m also in favour of enforcing some form of accounatbility onto cyclists, hi viz vest with ID number on the back would be a good start that hat to be worn in & around city centres…
