Cyclists

I always give cyclists at least 6 feet of space when passing them, no matter how long it takes for that space to become available (I’ve sat patiently behind for almost 10 minutes once). I have to add that I work for a good employer who wouldn’t want me taking liberties with peoples lives to save them a few quid. However, it infuriates me when I see cyclists squeezing up my near side, risking their lives and my livelihood.

The following image should apply to cyclists too.

If people stopped squeezing past one another, the roads would be a ■■■■ site safer for everyone. There’s an appalling lack of respect from all types of road users being shown on the roads of the UK.

So my message to cyclists would be the following…

If I make the effort to always give you 6 feet of space, please make the effort to always give me 6 feet of space. After all it’s your life that’s on the line.

Argggh what you on? I wear lycra and have a head cam. Therefore I can do what the ■■■■ I please. I AM the most important person on the road.

Ps I also can use the road and ignore the cycle lane.

Pps I can also use the pavement when I full my tight pants with brown fear because the fat bloke in a 405 that I have just antagonised decides to chase me. I’m all mouth and fear an ■■■ wooping.

Legal disclaimer. My post is in jest and isn’t in any form intended meant to be taken without a pinch of salt. This should save any one from injury when they tumble from their high horse.

I know Malky80 I agree

I’m unsure we will ‘ever’ solve this ‘problem’

I live in the south of London and right now London Transport is in the middle of doing more ‘cycle superhighways’ and some segregated cycle lanes. These road works will go on for one whole year, they are making our lives very difficult.

Every day I think: it’s fair enough building more cycle lanes and blah blah blah, however until the day the individuals LEARN advanced riding/driving (and common sense) this will not improve things.

Maybe it should be compulsory for us all to do advanced driving/riding courses? but then how do you regulate that?

The other day in a car I took the back road form Carrbridge to Forres because not so much traffic and can get a move on, bit like rallying. I saw this lycra clad prick coming the other way so slowed down to below the legal maximum but I could still see him mouthing of a load of garbage at me as I past it, made me feel like turning round and knocking him arse over ■■■ just for the hell of it !! At no time was I close to him to cause him any stress.

Dont think a cyclist could give us 6 foot of room unless we permanently positioned ourselves 6 foot from the kerb. (better make that 12 feet to allow for the 6 feet they need to pass empty parked cars in case a door should open all by itself).
In the end we are the so called professionals and cyclists should be a non issue, as an extremely vunerable road user they should always have priority and be protected, yes sometimes from themselves.

If the worst should happen and you end upconfronted by one due to either an error of judgement, unexpected traffic situation, taking an overtaking risk or simply they have made a meal out of a non event for youtube prowess I find a smile, wink, wave, handshake or fist up the jacksey quickly resolves a confrontational situation so both parties can enjoy their day.

I realise this only covers areas outside our capital and more extreme measures maybe needed in central London like chasing the buggers off then going arse over ■■■ for my viewing pleasure.

One had a dose of karma yesterday. Lycra power ranger is above stopping for red lights so rides into and through the roadworks to be met by a 4ft wide trench an no way of getting round

Probably because he realises that drivers do not give cyclists enough room when passing. Lorry drivers are among the worst offenders.
I ride a bike most days and mainly keep off the roads because drivers pass ridiculously close and I do not want to become a statistic. I reckon patience is the biggest problem. They just cannot be bothered to wait till there is enough room to pass.
We see videos on here and we get comment like…plenty of room…when there clearly is not. I also reckon a lot of the offenders are non cyclists and do not realise the problems a vehicle passing too close can cause.
And before anyone starts I know cyclists are no angels either but it is no wonder they get annoyed the way some drivers overtake them.

There are a few self proclaimed cyclists on here and probably quite a few closet lyrcra warriors. My post also doesn’t focus exclusively on cyclists. I also wanted to read other people opinions on the matter to see if my own was flawed in any way.

The point I was making is that if they don’t have 6 foot of space, they shouldn’t be undertaking. Just like I wouldn’t if there wasn’t enough space. I think it’s dangerous for them to be undertaking in tight spaces, as is the filtering performed by some motorcyclists.

Sadly your suggestion is flawed by the fact that the majority of drivers passed a driving test and how many of them drive to that standard now? The answer is very few.

i try ton give them plenty of space , but do they repay the compliment when they are riding two or three abreast and smirking over their shoulders ?

I followed a female who had headphones on and her arms folded, I gave her a very wide berth when I got the opportunity to pass.

In most towns & cities that " corridor of danger ’ is the cyclepath.

As mentioned above its mostly a lack of patience on the drivers side, whatever he/ she is driving. If you think of the time lost waiting for a safe place to past versus your whole journey it really brings it into perpective. As a cyclist and lorry driver albeit not full time I can honeslty say I would never put myself in the position many cyclists do, but I can also say being overtaken closely at speed is not pleasent more so the larger the vehicle is! Thats my two cents

Insufficient rest, falsifying driving records and having another accident whilst on bail for the first fatal collision. The guys a ■■■■■■■ and I I wouldn’t be surprised of he starts driving again the minute he’s out, licence or not.

What the hell was the driver playing at? Looking at one picture, is that the driver stood with the copper (holding the zimmer frame) behind the cordon? If so I bet the excuse “elderly driver was confused etc etc bull ■■■■ bull ■■■■…” will be used. Whoever was driving should be looking at a dangerous driving charge. Well done to those who rescued the cyclist though.
