Cyclists don't only mess with trucks - update

Level crossing cyclist in ‘nearest miss’ with train

A cyclist came within seconds of being struck by a train when she tried to dodge a closed level crossing barrier in Cambridgeshire.

The train driver was forced to apply the emergency break when he saw the woman at Waterbeach on 12 September.

Richard Schofield, from Network Rail, said it was “one of the closest near misses we’ve seen”.

British Transport Police are trying to trace the woman, who also ignored the flashing lights and warning signals.

More than 100 trains travel through the Waterbeach crossing each day, at speeds up to 75mph (120km/h).
‘Mopped brow’

Transport police officers have released images of the cyclist to highlight the dangers of misusing level crossings.

The footage shows her cycling up to the tracks before breaking hard and scurrying backwards just as the train speeds past.

Moments later she can be seen mopping her brow.

Jay Thompson, Greater Anglia’s head of safety, said: “Not only was this incident very traumatic for the driver, but it could have resulted in the cyclist being killed.”

Network Rail’s latest safety campaign, Track Tests, revealed a third of people think they would hear a train in time to move out of the way.

However, route manager Mr Schofield, said: "The person using the crossing not only didn’t hear the train, but ignored the warning lights and barriers, putting her life, the lives of passengers and the train driver in danger.

"Warning systems at level crossings are there for a reason, to protect users from the railway.

“I hope the release of this footage will highlight the importance of following the safety advice at level crossings.”

That is frigin incredible! Thickness of a layer of paint and she is deid! If she cycles about like that then there is truck/bus/car somewhere out there with her name on it.

She didn’t even attempt to stop by the look of it, I reckon she is so used to just riding across there without problems, maybe when she has changed her draws it will make her think, stupid ■■■■■!

I wonder how long it will be before the cycling lobby are calling for train drivers to receive more training so that they are able to avoid cyclists that seem to think that they are invincible? Or why were there not solid barriers that were impossible to dodge around?

In fact anything other than the truth…which is that this particular cyclist is seriously thick and not safe to be out!! I hope they trace her and make her apologise to the train driver in person.

Then fine her five grand to remind her that she shouldn’t do it again… :grimacing:

Then she rode off in the direction she came from, wtf ?

To use the phone,
“Hello Network Rail, I want to complain about the driver of…”

Unbelievable stupidity :open_mouth:

I imagine the cyclist went back home for clean underwear :unamused:

She got off the bike and pushed it away ,probably couldn’t sit on seat after her bowels emptied

mikey h:

FFS!!!

Thats another keyboard this forum owes me!

She deserves to be wiped out.id fine her and burst her bike tyres

Well that train shouldn’t of been there.
Its the drivers fault cyclists have right of way and have more RIGHT to be there… :unamused:

I’m waiting for it

train manufacturers will be forced to fit rear view and track side mirrors to all future new trains, and in a couple of years, all train operators will have to retro fit mirrors to all trains to avoid possible collisions with innocent cyclists

She would of been fine…she was wearing a helmet !! :stuck_out_tongue:

If she had been hit, and killed, would the train driver have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving? I doubt it…

Somebody almost did that at the level crossing by our yard, just a day after somebody got killed at one which was all over the news. The mind boggles.

Christ she was lucky but highlights cyclists not following the Highway Code

Why put in more safety bs, when Darwins natural selection has it all covered.
