Cyclists AGAIN!

Just delivering a load of steel to Battersea from Somerset today. Left nice and early to beat the traffic. I couldn’t believe the amount of bikes on the road in London with either no lights at all or only one light (usually the front). It was dawn and a lot of these bikes were really hard to spot. There was one particular bike who seemed to be going the same way as me who really annoyed me. He had no rear light so I gently tooted my horn to get his attention. Eventually he stopped and I had a ‘conversation’ with him out of the passenger window. I asked him why he had no rear light as I could hardly see him. Apparently he ‘forgot’ it. I also questioned why he had just run a red light. Apparently to get away from my poor driving. Two illegal manoeuvres in the space
of a few minutes (my driving is not poor incidentally he just didn’t like a few home truths.)

Why isn’t something being done to stop all this illegal riding? I have no sympathy for cyclists who break the rules and every sympathy for the poor sods, often truck drivers, who end up killing them.

I’ll post this pic again - Queen’s Circus roundabout…

See how faded the white paintwork is for the so-called cycling superhighway…

Easy for a bin wagon to approach the lights, and trundle straight over the “johnny no-lights” who happened to cross your path at a perpendicular angle with their lights red against them…
We already know that cyclists routinely run red lights - right? :unamused: :frowning:

Why isn’t something being done to stop all this illegal riding?

Probably for the same reason as drivers get away with so much. Lack of police is the answer.

if they policed the 2 wheeled suicidal kadunks to the degree that they stopped killing themselves then where would all the organ donors come from four our vital medical research industries?
they need a constant supply of fresh meat to practice on.
let them run free, you never hear of the lorry driver being injured when he creams one of them…its natures way.

More importantly, why is Dabaab refugee camp showing up on a map of Battersea?

It’s within the GLA’s London Plan to be placed in the middle of that roundabout.

As for the cyclists.Usual selective view of the law. Can’t ride on the pavement or even cycleways because that isn’t seen as reclaiming the streets from nasty motor traffic. But it’s ok to ride on the road during darkness with no lights and to run red traffic lights.

15 years ago i was dating a bird from battersea.
she was invariably the only pink face on her bus heading into central london going to work, and the same going home,(including the driver),every day without fail.
she got refused a managers job in tesco by a flipflop interviewer because she didnt speak polish as everyone working with her would be.
her local supermarket had 1 aisle for uk food, and the rest of the shop was taliban/ee food in one way or the other and couldnt get enrolled at the doctors as they were overfull with taliban/ee,nor could she even be put on the council waiting list as apart from not being pregnant or having kids, then every available house including ones being built were allocated to asylum seekers. …way to go diversified britain, and that was 15 years ago.

This film is older than I am, but it still manages to show Battersea in a poor light…

Time 27:50 in - Battersea park as I remember it in 1970… Nostalgia moment for me there!

Correct me if I’m wrong but you don’t need to even know the rules of traffic to be allowed to ride a bicycle on the road. :bulb:

Should just go in later as they tend to disappear after 9am [emoji848]

Yeah still the same, have to demonstrate a small amount but mah point is with a lot of drivers what they learn goes oot the windee after fev minutes.

Poor use of the roads with a disregard for the Highway Code is displayed by ALL road users:

HGVs
PCVs
7.5t
Vans
Cars
Motorcycles
Cyclists
Horses
Pedestrians

All the same. And each group of the above have a minority who think they are more important on the road than everyone else. “I’m bigger so I have more rights than you” “I’m vulnerable so I more rights than you”.

The Highway Code is designed for all to share it fairly whether your on wheels or not and whether you pay road tax or not.

We used to have to hold a “Cycling Profciency” scout badge, or other certificate to ride a bike on the road…

When did THAT quietly get “dropped”?

At no time did cyclists have take proficiency training. I have cycled for all of my life but was sent home from my shot at it because they said my bike was to big for me. That was about fifty five years ago. No one allows riders or pedestrians to use the roads.

+1

TBF most cyclists are drivers I would think and they probably know the rules (well as well as the average motorist) already but disregard as much if not more than motorists because they know they will not get caught.
Making cyclists sit a test would make very little difference. They ideally need to be segregated from dopey and aggressive drivers. Works really well here in Holland.

Fine with locals but when I drove round there I felt like any moment I would flatten one.

Reason don’t get stopped is lack of police. And also over use of cameras to prosecute people.
A car runs a red light it flashes gets your number plate.
A bike goes through camera cathes it but no number plate or anything to identify who it is
