A couple of weeks ago I got a newsletter from my company informing us that one of our Dutch drivers had caused a fatal road accident in Belgium. He was turning right into a minor road and crushed a cyclist under his wheels
This week in Antwerp I saw exactly the same thing happen. I was following a Belgian truck in the city of Antwerp when he stopped for some traffic lights. The road system was from left to right 2 tram lines, 3 road lanes, a footpath and a cycle track. This driver was in the right hand lane turning right, a scooter was on the cycle path. the truck got a green signal and started his turn and I saw what was going to happen. I tried to warn the driver but probably just confused the situation
The scooter rider ploughed straight into the belgians trailer wheels with one wheel going over his leg The scooter rider had ignored the give way sign and the driver would have lost site of the cycle lane as he made his turn.
I left my name and address with the truck company and with another witness but doubt I will be contacted as it seemed a clear case of stupidity.
Be careful with these type of cycle lanes
