Being on the coaches for a few years now i do a fair bit of overtaking lorrie sand i can honestly say about 95% of lorry drivers flash me in and on the odd occasion when a lorry comes past me (usually irish plated) i give them a flash in.
When i first started in this game i remember you would flick your tail lights of and on a cpl of times after moving in. I still do this on the coach. Im trying to remember when this practice stopped and we started using hazards or left then right indicators.
doesanyone else still flick thier tail lights as opposed to indicators?
Yes I think that was a far better way and safer as well. All this flashing left then right bollox can cause confusion with some of our dumber drivers!
Regarding people flashing me in.I never trust that person and always make sure I am well past before gently moving back.
Also remember exactly what flashing headlamps mean.If you are not careful you can end up in serious trouble for flashing your lights.
The idea of flashing in another vehicle came about years ago as the truck mirrors were very small and you could hardly see down the sides, the truck being overtaken would flash his one and only spotlamp to illuminate the verge, signalling to the other driver that it was safe to move back in, as it is today with the size and standard of mirrors I don’t think flashing is really necessary any more, and all the l/h r/h indicators just confuses the poor car drivers not that they need confusing. (Tin hat on.)

If you wait untill there is a two second gap between you and the vehicle which has just overtaken you then light flashing is very rarely needed as most vehicles have returned to your lane anyway! Furthermore flashing your lights at another road user has only one meaning, “to make them aware of your presence” the same as sounding your horn.
I’ve not read aal the posts on this thread, as I’ve only just looked and I have a life, I suspect that this post has allready been commented on, but I’m to add my 2 penneth.
As the OP says, flashing a passing truck is a system thats worked well for years, and as for the 2 second rule, which in a text book is laudable, and well flashing your lights means I’m here or whatever thats the whole point of the OP, truckers are not using an unwritten system that has served for well decades, and yes when you flesh someone in they will be closer to you than 2 second rule, but, and heres the clever bit, their going faster than you, and will pull away from to reveal the the 2 second gap if that is what bothers you. Though I feel the OP was commenting on drivers who wish to give you only a 2 nano second gap, and I am in whole hearted agreement with him. CUT OUT CUTTING IN, unless on skirting boards

God you just took me back about 35 years there. Thats just what my dad used to do in his old ERF flatbed taking paper to London for DRT. Used to love it when he’d let me flick the switch to say thanks. Now I’m driving minibuses I still flash drivers in and blip the hazards to thank others.

yeah I remember doing that, i think it was just easier to give it a right and left quickly, and for idle minded like me, anything thats easier is the way forward.
I allways flash coahes, very ocasionaly i’ve been flashed from a coach too, out the back window
