ERF-Continental:
There was a start of a discussion on oversquare ■■■■■■■ in the “AEC V8”-thread, however because of
quite some input out of relevant reports and brochures I decided to give that info here, where it belongs!

In the books of Clessie L. ■■■■■■■ and his son Lyle ■■■■■■■■ there is probably more, but that is something
to re-read/check for me by a glass of …

Happy research and reading! A-J

You certainly have a wonderful collection of vehicle history- please keep posting on this site.

@Anorak: thank you for that compliment and feel free (by PM or references to other threads) in case
I might be of any assitance…it’s a hard-copy collection and nowadays a lot is available on internet.

To ‘secret’ behind my ‘restricted’ collection is the variety/depth…so collect books, manual, bulletins,
brochures, reports and articles out of magazines and you will soon see your knowledge improves and
you’ll get the virus to proceed on that subject. Attached some scans…appropriate for this thread.

My collection is restricted or specialised with ■■■■■■■■ ERF, Krupp, White and Alfa Romeo (trucks) as
core-business, with some strange ducks in the basket  like Denonville, Minerva, OM etc

Nice day,

A-J

Quite right Larry often I get reports of it steaming past other lorries on the steepest of motorway hills by drivers who can really identify it other than they were blown in to the weeds by a green double drive Erf .

What a magnificent beast. Gearbox? Robert

That’s what I imagined, cheers. Here are 3 more pictures of this splendid beast that I’ve just found…Apologies for not remembering who took the pictures. Is it double-drive? Robert

It’s double drive ,and iirc it’s got a stainless exhaust stack with matching air intake to look like twin stacks .

Example of a thorough V8…265hp, model in 1/25 scale

Example of a thorough I6…290hp, model in 1/25 scale

And after RC 1 naturally the RC 2

Evening all, ERF-Continental, AJ, very interesting input, thank you!

Interesting to see the Guy Motors/■■■■■■■ endeavour listed in the S L Gaal report as Jaguar ■■■■■■■ Limited. Guy Motors being part of William Lyons`s Jaguar Grouping of Daimler, Coventry Climax Guy, and their neighbour in Wolverhampton Henry Meadows, whose assembly halls were re designed to build the Vim/Vine engines. These were to be the “standard” fit for the "Big Jaguar lorry…the Guy big J.

As had also been proposed for the original Berliet, replacement for the “Relax Cab” TR250 ranges, by a “superweight” version of the mid weight, air suspended, Berliet Stradair. Charbonneaux`s design studio came up with some quite spectacular proposals based on the Stradair cab, with the Vim/Vine,either, under, or behind the drivers cab. But thankfully, common sense prevailed, and the proposed, Berliet/ ■■■■■■■ project did not go any further, the Stradair remained a , (complicated), middleweight, and the Berliet in line 6, and V8 were developed.

But it just shows how interested were ■■■■■■■■ in developing joint Manufacturing deals in Europe…if only the design concept of the V had been right!!

Cheerio for now.

DIG:
Just to add a a different perspective on the type of engine that I owned and operated here in Western Australia from the ■■■■■■■ family it was K19 a 19litre engine that when originally purchased was set at 450bhp I understand it was originally developed as a stationary unit i.e. gen set /marine unit/earthmoving and adapted later to road transport and fitted as mine was in a W model Kenworth prime mover……
Cheers Dig

Yes a nice big old school powerful engine Dig.
One of my boys skippered a workboat powered with 2-KTA19M’s, around a lazy 750hp each.
Was overtaken by an ancient KW re-powered with one in the late 80’s.
No speed limiter and I watched him disappear into the sunset.
Felt like Dennis Weaver from Duel.

Long before the co-operation with Krupp for a license production of V6’s-V8’s in the sixties, Clessie L. ■■■■■■■
had first European contacts in the thirties. After good racing-results on the Indianapolis-track (nowadays Indy 500)
in 1931 with No.8 and the first installation of a ■■■■■■■ H-engine in a White-chassis of Purity Stores, trips were
planned to France at Citroën, Italy, (Fiat) and the UK where Thornycroft showed a lot of interest. The company
of C.C. Wakefield & Co. (Castrol) even offered a free transfer of the racing-car form USA towards Europe.

Also Scintilla of Solothurn (Switzerland) was visited so Clessie could inform himself as fuel ignation-systems interested
him a lot…knowing British vehicles (and other countires) applied the Bosch-system.

■■■■■■■ No.8-1931-Indianapolis.jpg

First (commercial) installation in a US-truck (White) was in 1932 for Purity Stores, who soon
ran 5 White’s ■■■■■■■ Diesel powered out of the earlier results with the diesel, …oil-engine.

First (commercial) installation in an European truck (A.S.) was also in 1932 however no details,
no pictures (yet) of the customer/operator/truck. A.S. is the abbrevation of “Automobielfabriek
P. Schmidt” of Amsterdam (office) and Alkmaar (works) and were former importers, distributors
and assemblers of “Republic” US-trucks. Again the Dutch, they are everywhere…it seems …grin

I assume it is known that ■■■■■■■ Diesel once made 2-stroke diesels?

Small detail…White did protest to deliver/sell the White-chassis and odd enough White ranked
in the TOP-10 on ■■■■■■■ Diesel customers list …with Mack, Autocar, International etc
