Cummins nte 290

I took my 320 to Paul Owen this morning with the phantom ticking hope he can sort it ,it sounds bad.Is it more likely to be the pump drive or the comp to timing gears?

high erf ecx these 14ltr ■■■■■■■ had a habit of shearing the tops of the cyl head bolts off, but usually the external bolts not the ones covered by the rocker housing, when this happens the noise is like a bird cherping, the best way to check the bolts is to use a very light hammer and just tap the heads of the bolts obviously if the sound of you tapping the bolts changes youve found the offending bolt, also there are two drive coupling spiders one between the aux drive pulley and compressor also as you know one between the compressor and fuel pressure pump the front one from memory is a black one and the rear is white as i remember but its been a while although these rarely fail totally sometimes you find the odd fragment of spider coupling in the sump when you do an oil change (rick)

Hi, hope someone can help me, i’ve got a 1983 Erf c series fitted with a ■■■■■■■ NTE290, which has developed a “ticking” noise which seems to come from the lhs of the engine. I took it to a fuel injection specialist who had it for two days and couldnt find anything wrong with it, but the noise can be heard on tick over, and seems to come in when the revs get over 1500. When driving it back from the fuel inj specialist after a few miles the noise stopped, i hav’nt really driven it any distance since then, only short journeys but the noise still persists. A mechanic friend of mine had a look and diagnosed a faulty compressor, he was sure it was’nt coming from the engine internally. My next problem is that after talking to a very helpfull parts guy at Richard Read Commercials today, he imformed me that neither an overhaul kit or replacement commpressor are available any more. It would be great to hear from anybody who worked on these engines when they were current.
Thanks

Hi ERF ECX,

If you have no luck there call Pete at www.pittsburghpower.com There’s not much those guys don’t know about Big Cam ■■■■■■■ and I really find them very very helpful as well. They specialise in building Big Cams at 800 BHP in America for ownerdrivers and have all the genuine ■■■■■■■ parts ready on the shelf for you. If you do need to call them, have your CPL number ready and the engine number(Both numbers on the plate at the front lh corner of the engine). They recently supplied a water pump to me for a Small Cam fitted to a Mk 1 Transcon for US$169 plus shipping. ■■■■■■■ UK initially told me there were none available and subsequently informed me they could possibly source one for me for ST£500. Good luck in your quest!

the ticking noise could be from the coupling sleeve which drives the compressor from the front pulley. the internal splines tend to wear and make ticking or chaffing noise

What part if the world are you in. I have worked on them for many years but would need to hear it. They are prone to the spider joint between the pump and comp but if you have had the pump off I am sure you would have checked that it was there and and worn away? and was there?
