Another question who owns the old Bewick depot?

I understand it’s Fishwicks who bought the old Libby site adjacent, the liquidator of WRM would have sold them the freehold.

Who are Fishwicks ?

They were origionally Cold store operators from St.Helens who moved into development of industrial estates,Gordon Fishwick was the main man,a very decent chap, but I think he will be well retired by now.

Memo to " georgeking" .

You seem to think you think you know such a lot about haulage , not just in your native ■■■■■■■ , but as a whole.
But, your statements are now appearing to be along parallel lines of those from ■■■■■■■■ Gill , - i.e. always as a question .
Perhaps you should have chosen transport as your career, and learned the nitty-gritty way , instead of looking-in from
the “outside”. Maybe it`s not too late in life for you to make a career change , eh “george” ?

Cheers, cattle wagon man.

Not until you’ve got half a dozen on a “fast eddie” Franchise Paul can you claim to have “made it”,well for “fast eddie” any road !!! Cheers Dennis.

There are someone from South ■■■■■■■ called Brewer who run about 40 new Scania all on sub contract to Eddie Stobart, don’t why he does not look for his own contracts, all of his vehicles are in Stobarts livery.

Hello georgeking
Thats not quite true. Ed Brewer is from Penrith and he runs around 25 Scanias.
He runs around 18 of these in his own livery and the rest are in his own livery, which is red and white with Brewer stamped on the top.
Ed Brewer runs from two depots, Mardale Rd, Penrith and Old Rugby Truck Stop, Rugby.

Apart from ESL subcontracting (which he has done since the mid 1970’s), he also does subbing from Brewers Road Haulage (which is run by Alan Glendinning) and Alan Glendinning Haulage, both from Penrith. He also has a contract with Dean Auld Transport from Penrith.

Most of the Scanias are Toplines (the oldest been 2006 reg and the newest been 4 2012s), but he runs two Scania R Highlines in his own livery.
I hope this helps george
Kindest regards

Both Alan Glendinning and AW Jenkinson have bought some of the new style Mercedes tractor units.

What’s the reason behind Alan Glendinning owning Brewers Road Haulage as well? It seems odd having two small haulage businesses.

Hello george
That right. I’ve seen a photo on Facebook of Jenkinsons one.
As far as I know, Alan Glendinning bought Brewers Road Haulage because the business was up for sale a few years ago, and he wanted to expand into running two companies (and buying a small rival)
This buisness however is mainly run by his wife I belive.
Brewers Road Haulage is a 100% MAN fleet, all fairly new.
They also have a similar colour scheme.

Maybe someone else on Trucknet can give you more detail than I can george?
Kindest regards

Perfectly harmless (or so I think)

Memo to “cattle wagon man”.

You raise some interesting points do I know a lot about road haulage, well I have probably dealt with 20+ hauliers in a professional capacity, I know nothing about managing drivers, I know nothing about roping and sheeting nor do I want to know anything about it, now the financial side of business I will blow my own trumpet here, I know a one hell of a lot here and I am proud of it.
For a West ■■■■■■■■ like me with a very strong accent at that, I have not done too badly advising some of the world’s largest hedge funds and other companies, being a haulier was my only ambition when I was young, luckily I saw sense. At the moment I have a huge amount of stress in my life, so huge I have even stopped drinking, what do I do to relax well I come on here, believe me trucknet uk helps me relax, as does facebook.

A member of my family owned one of the finest hauliers ■■■■■■■ has ever seen, I spent a large part of my youth learning about the haulage business from a true legend and a man who has influenced my life so much Jim Lawson, I asked that man so many questions and guess what I learned one hell of a lot from him about running a haulage business which I have put into practice on many occasions. My child hood heroes (amongst many) were T Brady I used to love visiting their yard in Duke Street, when I was a teenager I often wondered why do Brady’s have orange trailers and how many 141’s do they own? Guess what thirty years later I still wondered about these hence me asking Ste Sleds and I was delighted that he knew the answer.

I have been involved in the running of transport companies I mentioned previously a Russian airline and now I will mention TAM Brazilian Airlines, yes mate I have a huge amount of experience in transport. I know the people who run Britain’s top haulage company, guess what every time I meet them they always ask my opinion on the industry, Eddie Stobart et al. OK I am a bit of a know it all, but I get paid a lot of money professionally for being such a know it all, again I must be doing something right.

There is one person on here I respect so much, I get so much pleasure chatting to him on here, yes I like to wind him up, yes I like to put him down a peg or two (see my comment about the size of T Brady to him) that person’s name is Dennis Smith, I even have the same colour hair as him. Now when he was my age he had over 80 lorries, do I envy him? no I do not, getting to know him (in cyberspace at least) has made me realise that I made the right decision not to enter the haulage industry! Do I envy Andrew Tinkler now that’s another story!

One of the best ways of learning is by asking questions, I asked a lot when I was a teenager and no doubt I will keep on asking them even when I am a pensioner!

Kindest Regards

You keep on asking mate its the only way to find out sometimes, that’s the beauty of forums.
Steve.

To do the job properly Steve, you had to have the right equipment i.e.Sheets and ropes,we never had 1 (one) wet claim in the 13 years we ran out of Bowies with flats, honest !I don’t know how Bradys went on and how the likes of The Addams family got any load to it’s final destination, dry, I couldn’t guess, unless it was during the height of summer during a hot spell !! They often had 5 and 6 sheets, the size of hankies, but snotty ones as well !! I used to go mad at Lamby and demand how they could compare them against our outfit, but heard he just liked winding me up !! he knew which was the decent outfit, plus I had Possy on my side,Brother !!! Cheers Dennis.

No doubt Barkers of Lindale and Ashburners of Millom had an high regard for their main competitor and peer Bewick Transport!

Do me a favour “george” ! Cheers dennis.

A lot of West ■■■■■■■■ hauliers used to say the same things about Lawsons and Tyson Burridge, look at those two now. I believe that haulage was only a side business for both Ashburners who were a major fuel distributor and H Barker who were a timber importer and saw-miller.

Commenting only on Ashburners and Barkers “george”,firstly your descriptions of their activities are OTT (probably fully intended to be !)Maybe in Ashburners case they were indeed local coal merchants around Millom, but attempting to operate a haulage operation from the same area is a bit akin to running the 100 mtrs with a “ball and chain” around your ankle! As for Barkers, yes, they did import timber but only as a Contract haulier to AP Builders merchants of Kendal (AP is the initials of Pattinsons who were major builders in the Lake District and still have a large property folio in the Windermere area).Barkers artic ( A Comet 90) driven for many years by Dougy Thompson from Selside used to bring in one load of timber every day,Mon to Fri,from Liverpool.Barkers were also timber fellers and merchants of local woodlands. They did expand into general haulage at the time of de-licencing,their main haulage customer was,of course,Bowater Scott, and IIRC,their main delivery area was Scotland where they reloaded Potatoes for the south. They also hauled long lengths of sawn timber up to the west coast of Scotland for harbour walls etc.Nick names for Barkers IIRC were “Wood Choppers” and “The Adams Family” !! Cheers Dennis.
