Yes Tankerman early to mid 60s I would think, also Jims mate was Bob Maxwell not Joe his brother as previously stated. Cheers L 600

Thanks L600, what about Harold Wood’s tankers working out of Marchon. I think they were brown and had local drivers…
We had about six tankers working out of Albright and Wilson with Accrington men up to it closing. We also had a shunter at Accrington depot and Whitehaven local men would run down at night with upto six tanks and our man would tip at McBrides at Burnley.

First time I was there was April 1970, I did two loads of Dobanic acid to Pumpherston for Shell and it was a weeks work for me.

I remember Smith and Robinsons were running out of Marchon to Proctor and Gamble Trafford Park, their motors were double-shifted.Harold Woods had some in there as well and I think they were “A” series ERFs in that brown livery that you mentioned Russell. They altered to a red livery later I think

Hi Chris, I can remember being in Proctor & Gambles at City Rd, Newcastle circa 1969 delivering some thing from Marchon can’t remember what (bags or superkegs etc ■■?) and seeing a brown coloured ERF 8 wheeler of Smith & Robinsons delivering hydrochloric acid or hydrogen peroxide ■■? it certainly had a strong smell that cleared out ones sinuses. Happy days . Leyland 600.

can any one in ■■■■■■■ or the old westmoreland remember a livestock firm that operated in that area they had eight wheel fodens and erf with fixed wooden 3 deck bodies, they were painted in yellow and black i remember them in late fifties and early sixties when i was running to scotland with livestock they were always coming down south with lambs on board.the foden was a two stroke and what a sound i was jealous as i only had a commer two stroke.any one remeber them?

I thought you may have been referring to Muckle double deck cattle transport from ■■■■■■■■■ cant remember the colour as it was dark in the 60,s & they were going to Taunton market & sleep overnight,
I believe they were 8 wheeled AEC Mammoths, It was tight in the market & to see them turning around you would think the circus had come to town.

GARNERS JCB.jpg

Hi finney, The company was operated by Claude Hughes from a garage at Carleton on the A 6, southern outskirts of Carlisle. The garage later become the Carlisle Foden depot. I can remember them well, Claude had a Wolseley car with a 4LK Gardner fitted. Thos Muckle of Rothbury had a double deck AEC Mammoth Major cattle wagon (two decks of cows) which I saw exhibited at the Royal Show on Newcastle Town Moor circa 1960. Green cab and body with cream relief on the upper cab.

is that the one. jeh

Yes jeh, this is the wagon we have been discussing. I bet it rolled terribly on corners. This photo looks like the time I saw it on display at the Royal Show, A livestock haulier friend and myself who were attending the show with a Leyland Beaver bringing ■■■■■■■■ fell ponies for exhibition had a good look at the wagon including a sit in the drivers seat. This is the only Mk V AEC I have ever been in.
