Hi swain ,
The company you are referring to was called Hughes & Beattie , also known as Claude Hughes. You are correct about their colour scheme , - quite striking in design and appearance.
They owned two-stroke Fodens , the earlier ones were twin-steer , and later an 8 wheeler .
I have some photographs , but I am unsure if Copyright will permit me to show them on here.
Maybe someone else can shed more light on this firm , hopefully .

Hi Larry , v7victor , and Thomas ( ■■■■■■■■ ) Gill ,
To bring you up to date , here is one of Geoffrey Atkinson `s modern fleet.
Taken at the Carlisle Vintage Rally , last weekend.
All of Geoff s wagons have been named with a Royal theme , each with the local " Stainmore " prefix. On the DAF nearside cab panel is a reminder of one of the fleet from around 1971 , a Ford D 1000 , bearing the name of " Stainmore Prince " . This Ford is pictured carrying the 22 demountable Houghton livestock container.
I have known Geoff for many years , and he is a great character , and full of knowledge and nostalga.

P.S Hwo many lorries to Atkinsons run? It is 7 or 8?
When Tom Maughan first started driving , he drove a Ford Trader for Alderson & Huddart , transporting livestock throughout the north of England and Scotland. He bought a Leyland Boxer 16 tonner and started on his own around 1976.
Tom chose a colour scheme that would be easily recognised as his own , as shown here.
After purchasing a Volvo F 86 6 wheeler to carry bricks and blocks , he remained a true Volvo addict until he retired ,last year.
Tom never forgot his first steed , so he bought this Ford Trader to remind him of his early years , and also to show how cabs , engines , gearboxes , etc., have developed during his driving years.
He proudly stands next to his new pride and joy, attending the Kirkby Stephen Rally this year.
I consider myself lucky to have been able to take this photograph , because there was a continual gathering of people who wanted to ask Tom about his splendid exhibit , which , to me , was the star of the Rally.
Hi CWM, I remember Claude Hughes and his fleet of Fodens painted a vivid yellow and black. His depot was at Carleton on the outskirts of Carlisle near the old BRS Depot. I think CH,s premises became the Carlisle depot of Fodens Ltd. I remember as a teenage apprentice working on London Rd and walking up Botchergate at lunchtimes with a Bewick acquaintance,(Norman Dowell) often seeing a large Wolsey car approaching which sounded like a 6 ton Foden OG which Robsons operated at the time. This turned out to be Claude in his Gardner 4LK powered Wolsey. He ran Foden 8 wheelers and a Chinese 6.
Cheers Leyland 600.

I do recall seeing those Claude Hughes motors passing through Kendal “when I were a lad” their colour scheme was um, er, a bit different to that of other ■■■■■■■■■■ livestock removers fleets,I’m thinking particularly of British Racing green, with white roofs !! I suppose if a haulier ran a big Wolsely with a Gardner 4LK engine he was entitled to to be a “bit flamboyant” with his choice of fleet colours !! Cheers Dennis.
Hi Leyland 600 and Dennis ,
Claude Hughes chose a mixture of contrasting colours, - black and yellow , with ( I think ) a white separation band !! I would be grateful for any photographs , black & white or colour , to add to the few I already have.
Thanks , Leyland 600 for the location of C.H. `s depot. That was something I did not know , other than Carlisle.
I think I am correct to believe that one of the last wagons owned by C. H. was an Atkinson 6 wheeler .
Thanks to both of you .
Cheers , cattle wagon man.
