hiya,
Excellent bit of art in that last pic Dennis, i could quite happily put my signature on that one, after a lifetime of mainly rope and sheeting i can honestly say i never had one signature for a wet or damaged load or got done for an insecure load so i must have been doing something right.
thanks harry long retired.
Hiya “H” kind comments! thanks! anyway don’t change the subject how much did you Win/lose on the National then? Back to reality we carried loads like this for 13 years and never got one wet and only had to tranship one that a “short service driver” “shot” at Newby Bridge but we managed to retrieve the situation so it arrived safe and sound at West Thurrock!! Cheers Dennis.
And no ■■■■■■■■ thread (or formerly the Furness part of Lancashire) would be complete without a shot of the finest waggon & trailer driver bar none! The bloke on the left Eric Postlethwaite ( don’t know who the other geezer is on the right !) Eric was a proffessional at his craft although I went on to employ a continuous stream of some of the finest drivers in the UK Eric was always the “Gold Standard” to compare with as he was absolutley “Bloody Magic” at his job!! Bewick.
i wonder who the geezer on the right is, he looks familiar from somewere ha ha
Here you are Stevie B and Mart this shot shows you how well in we were at Bowies during the 70s !!! How many other contractors were allowed to pull Bowies vans!! As long as Possy said it was OK Lamby authourised it and who had been Possy’s favourite trailer mate? Happy days!! Dennis.
Now then mr smith, remember there was a blue single axel trailer in the yard at milnthorpe, was this one of bowwies old trailers ■■?

There must be something wrong with your vision Mart (but being a bus driver you will never see the car you have just pulled out in front of that is ploughing a furrow in the Tarmac behind the bus !!!) The trailer you are reffering to was a little 20ft box van that I bought off Storey’s when they packed up for a £100 if I remember and I used it to store bales of shavings for my stables! I don’t know what WRM used it for! maybe for Graeam Allisons office when he came on a visit from ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ Anymore good photos to put on the thread then or are you just a visitor now Mart ? Cheers Dennis.PS how does a 20ft mini van become a York 36 ft long by 9 ft 6" high Bowater van.

I bet the trailers were better looked after whren you pulled em Dennis. You might ave been asked to pull em incase any mechanical work needed doing as Bowaters fitters were OK but weren’t the best (appart from Graham Coyd or “Super Spanners” as he was know) he knew his way round a Gardner well enough a really good fitter.

Hiya Steve the Bowie vans were fairly new when we pulled them from time to time.Mike Mills was the workshop foreman in those days the trailer fitter was called Ted (can’t re-call his name) Cheers Dennis.
Ste Burrow:
Aye. My dad remembers Mike a decent lad he was. There was also Niel Clarkson who now runs Clarkson Coachways in Barrow
Where’s all the “gadgy’s” from around Penrith? They will have more tales than “Hands Christian Andersen” but seem very reluctant to put them on the thread!!! It is obviously their very strict “Methodist and Tee-total” upbringing that prevents them from “coming clean” The thread is a lot poorer for their reluctance unless of course they are still living in the “dark ages” and are un-able to use a computer!!! Bewick.
Adding these to this thread, hope thats ok with everyone to keep the thread going, copied from a couple of my transport books.
Nelsons of Arnside & a couple of Marchon(Albright & Wilson Tankers.
But I did wonder why our auditors charges never fell a littlie but continued to grow year on year! Maybe someone out there could enlighten me!!! Bewick.

Don’t be sarky Mr. Smith, you know better than most that there’s no such thing as a free lunch.
Chris Webb:
Nice pictures of the Marchon Atki and AEC John.
I remember going up that hill to their works many times.
Do you remember the notorious bay4 where you loaded the palletised soap powder, you had to reverse in the last bay in corner on blindside, with a wall preventing you taking a wide sweep, and 2inches clearance either side of bay, it had to be spot on to get in. I was 21yr old with a Mark 2 Atki (split windscreen job) with no power steering every time I scraped the corner of trailer along the bay side a big cheer came from the 111 and 88 drivers , one guy didnt cheer and came over to guide me in, a Tyson Burridge driver who had driven one of these beasts himself, and knew how awkward the manouevre was. Through time I mastered it and developed arms like Popeye because of the Atki

My dad remembers bay 4 very, very well - he fell off the top of his load of palletised soap powder while sheeting it and smashed his foot. He then drove home to Lancashire with it in that state andafter going to casualty (where they cut his boot off - his foot was so swollen) he spent 6 weeks off work with his foot in a cast.
He was driving an AEC Marshal for Caunces of Rufford at the time and left not long after for a ‘safer’ job driving a flour tanker for Allied Mills.
heres a few of Bowies Barrow depot. The first is a shot of my dad gettin a trophy for winning Bowater_Scott fork truck driver of the year in 1976. This scene would look alot differnet now as the yard where these units are parked is now where the newest Andrex machines have been built.
Next is the Seddon that my grandad drove GUW 75N pulling trailer number 75. It had a 6LXB Gardner/6sp DB 'box. Some of the drivers demanded they had a pay rise when they came of the Leyland Mastiffs onto these Seddons as the Seddons had bigger engines!!! (the Mastiffs had V8 Perkins at 179hp and the Seddons had 180hp!)
On Hartshead Moor services
And a line up of the newer Sed Atki 400 “Sand Pans”. My grandad had the nearest one which had white wind deflectors nicknamed “ole Smokie” for reasons obvious as it had a 6LXB Gardner. My dads ended up havin a replica 401 grille fitted after someone had a bump in it.
Anyone remeber the truck shows that used to be on at Truckhaven at Carnforth? I dont remember how many there were but this was taken when the FH was new, next to Bewicks Scania on Ross foods. The little lad on the left is me with my “baby” brother. Shows how long ago this was taken! My brother would have been more impressed with Bewicks motor as he’s Scania mad.
Next is my dad’s MAN and his old FL10 taken at Scott Paper at Barrow (thats me in the cab of my dad’s MAN) after loading reels one Saturday morning.
I dont know if this Holmes was a relation of Richard Holmes but they had similar units.
Back to a classic now one of Nelson’s of Arnside F88 240
