Cicely were Seddon dealers, they may well have been able to get Atki after merger I really don’t know, although they did sell a handful of Seddon Atkis before going over just to Merc, which they got in I think 75, after taking over the short-lived Tri-Star Commercials in Blackburn, of which ■■■■ Franklin was a partner. Prior to Tri-Star, the Merc dealer for Lancashire was Stanley Hughes in Gommersal, Cleckheaton, better known as a coach dealer, now Arriva DAF.
From memory this was the tractor that came from Cicely in late 73’ seen here in the Mill at Beetham on trade plates brand new.Bewick.
excuse my ignorance and possible youth,…but is there a connection between the author(bewick),and the lorries per chance?,and if so,what happened to the company, info etc.im sure i saw the smart fleet running at one time.

hiya,
Excellent bit of art in that last pic Dennis, i could quite happily put my signature on that one, after a lifetime of mainly rope and sheeting i can honestly say i never had one signature for a wet or damaged load or got done for an insecure load so i must have been doing something right.
thanks harry long retired.
Hiya “H” kind comments! thanks! anyway don’t change the subject how much did you Win/lose on the National then? Back to reality we carried loads like this for 13 years and never got one wet and only had to tranship one that a “short service driver” “shot” at Newby Bridge but we managed to retrieve the situation so it arrived safe and sound at West Thurrock!! Cheers Dennis.
hiya,
Dennis staked about £35 lost about £35, could’nt pick the proverbial hooter.
thanks harry long retired.

And no ■■■■■■■■ thread (or formerly the Furness part of Lancashire) would be complete without a shot of the finest waggon & trailer driver bar none! The bloke on the left Eric Postlethwaite ( don’t know who the other geezer is on the right !) Eric was a proffessional at his craft although I went on to employ a continuous stream of some of the finest drivers in the UK Eric was always the “Gold Standard” to compare with as he was absolutley “Bloody Magic” at his job!! Bewick.

hiya,
Just shot me down there Dennis i always rated my spell as a wag and drag driver as pretty good, but have actually seen that outfit on occasion remember it when i was also driving an Octopus of an earlier vintage that motor of Eric’s did have power steering though mine did sometimes when i could get the trailer boy to give me a hand to pull the wheel round in a tight spot, yes Dennis, Eric was a legend and everybody spoke highly of him, i never got that accolade just mister average thats me, but my sheets did’nt flap about.
thanks harry long retired.

Dennis do you remember Barkers from Lindale? My uncle worked for them for a bit I think they used to knickname them the Adams Family?
Hiya young Mr.B yes I remember the Adams family well you had to see the crappy trailers and rubbish sheets they used to believe it !! I bet they had some wet claims on the Bowater loads ! We were never involved in the same areas they went to which if I remember was Scotland mainly and ,with respect ,we didn’t want any of their drivers either !Anyway keep these nuggets of interest coming and if I can I will always comment as fairly as I can on anything I can remember!! Dennis.
You were right about Barkers Dennis. Notice on the photo of the Seddon that there is a bar supporting the roof and also all drivers that drove it was “issued” with a pack of chewing gum to make repairs when it rained!!!
Thought I would include some Croppers. Most people would have heard of the legend that is Harold (Big H) who is still driving for them on a Globetrotter FH. However here are a few of there earlier wagons some Seddons in the dark green they used to have they now have a lighter shade of green like on the F12 below.

Super shots of Croppers Steve keep 'em coming! Yea Big “H” got deported from Broughton-in-Furness to Staveley in around 1968 ( I think) He worked for W.H.Towers of Broughton then onto G.W. Taylors (Dodge 4 wheeler). Dennis.
Thought I’d also add some photos of when the trucks my dad worked for when I “turned up”. My dad and grandad took their redundancies at Bowaters in 1985 and went self employed with Stephenson-Jones owned by two drivers (Les Stephenson and Barry Jones). They mainly had ERF’s and ran out of Bowaters but they also had a DAF 2800 and MAN 321.
The C-series was driven from new by my dad and grandad on trunk from Barrow-in-Furness to Bowaters Hinkley yard moving toilet rolls. It had an L10 ■■■■■■■ and nine speed Fuller. Considering my dad didn’t do many nights out a factory sleeper was a big improvement on the day cab SA400 he had at Bowaters doing nights out (although digs were quite common then)
My dad ended up on the B-Series. this was new to Deep-Freeze Aberdeen and had a 14 Litre 290 ■■■■■■■ and could go off the clock! M.E.Saunders had day cab FL6 Volvo’s doin the same work! T
This DAF 2800 DKS was the unit my grandad ended up on. It had the larger DAF engine and a 13 speed Fuller (best gearbox bar none). The first photo ison Exeter servicesafter it had been bought. It was Irish and had a speed limiter (that worked!) set at 62mph which it did everywhere. The next photos are of the DAF at Ulverston Carnival with me behind the wheel. I’d have only been about 9 month old then!

1985 the year we kicked Bowies into touch because they opened the flood gates to every man and his dog and completely knackered what had been a reasonable job! But we were fortunate as we had more than enough quality traffic to keep us occupied.I had put off taking the decision to pull out of Bowies until the Christmas break as I knew Lamby would go mad (which he did)but I wasn’t going to join the jackals fighting over what had fast become crap traffic.Merry Christmas Bowies wer’e outta here!! Dennis.

I see Big H in passing now and again. We used to load out of Croppers regular. Last time I saw H was a couple of months ago at Europa truckstop at Lesmahogow.
Just to keep the thread going here are few shots of Cannons Transport from Levens near Kendal (opposite when the Gilpin Bridge Inn is). Cannons are still going with a couple of IVECO Stralis’ and Renault Premiums and one Fosen Alpha for Terry Cannon to drive. They now pull for the brewery but they used to have a good fleet of tippers (Scanias, Volvos, ERF’s, Fodens).

it was travelling with me old man for this lot that made want to be a wagon driver,(an if i had a quid for all the drivers that told me not to do it, i neednt work now) . did i listen course i didnt.

I assume the photo was taken at Graham Commercials in75/76 just prior to us taking delivery of our first 111s.One or two faces are vaguley familiar and I think I can definitely ID John Irving near the far end but as I was from the south of the county I didn’t mix much with the riff raff from the north!!! The wife and I did enjoy a few good do’s at Grahams christmas parties at Moota with the Boyes lads and John Irving and when you are sat eating trifle with George Graham at 2 A.M. you know youv’e had a good do Eh!
