I saw Dot Huguez this morning. She says that she will have a root around. As soon as I get one, I,ll post it up. But don,t start crying Harry, with all the nostalgia.
Well done Mum Gill by the way. She is one of them that kept this country going during the war.
“Elderly Gentlemen”!! , i,ve not heard owld waggon drivers referred to as that before Harry, it surely must be just old retired Geordie ones.
hiya,
buycrider,i’ll have you know i’m only a semi skilled geordie being from lancs half a lifetime ago, so if you think the lads from the north east are gentlemen i’m blowed if i know what category i come bit of a mongrel i guess, the lancashire era was when i did the shap running following in ma’s footsteps or tyretracks i suppose, a lot of old wagon drivers should have been knighted though i got a lot of help from the older guys when i started driving which i was grateful for and tried to be equally helpful to younger lads as i got on in years, i always stopped if needed and the load got to where it was going when i got it there, couldn’t be doing with timed deliveries wouldn’t last a week now, viva le yesterday.
thanks harry long retired.
Saw this ERF “A” Series while out mooching about. Its got the big doors. 220■■■■■■■ Engine.10 speed Fuller Roadranger Box.
Reg No.RJM189M. It has been sitting where I took the picture for a few years.
Harry Gill, and other nostalgia buffs;Stick this in the Google search bar–Eagles Nest cafe on the old A6 at Shap. –
When the page comes up, click on Haulage Contractors & Transport Photographs in the Countryside, and hopefully you are there .Back over 50 years to wallow in nostalgia.
When you have read the first bit, and you get down to the photo links, the third one shows Dorothy (Houguez), and Ann (Watson ,now Great Grandma Greenaway), in their prime, as you will remember them. I see them both almost every day. I,ve told them that you are asking after them. They said Thanks.
If it goes pear-shaped let me know.I,ll try again.
I did happen to go in the Jungle Cafe once, in 1970, it must have been just before the M6 link was open, I was a drivers mate on Banbury Buildings at the time, we had just got a Leyland Super Comet, ergo cab E reg i think, with only a 28’ trailer (Boden, remember them) and 16 ton of concrete it still wouldn’t pull you out of bed, but at least the heater worked unlike the previous Albion LAD cab.
Dave the Renegade:
We took this picture of the stone on Shap Summit last August, been by it several times, but hadn’t had a pic before.
And this is what it looked like a few months before it got there:
We picked it up from Shap Granite one Saturday morning (had to take our own fork lift for the job), and delivered it to the stonemason at Troutbeck Bridge. It was right up at the top of the quarry, but no problem with a proper lorry
hiya,
stravaiger, buycrider thank you lads for getting the info regarding the eagles nest i’d never have found the info under my own steam i’m really the useless eustace of the computer world, seeing the staff in the cafe brings back memories over 50 years since i was first in there and that pic makes it seem like only yesterday, when you think back to the time my mother used to do the shap run the wagon headlights was only slits with a deflector on top how they could see anything on that road much more treacherous then than when i was doing the run, my mother used to do the changeover at our house the day driver used to go somewhere south to load and bring the wagon for her take north tip and return, i wonder if our neighbours ever knew there was this six wheeler and drag fully loaded with all sorts of munitions it was always parked for a couple of hours before mam set, off maybe as well they didn’t know,
thanks harry long retired.
Glad you enjoyed the pictures Harry. Jim,s link is spot on. I suppose your Mam had to make sure you,d had a wash and was tucked up in bed, with your Teddy and your Hot water bottle before she left for that night run.
I forgot to add. It is Dorothy on the Left. Ann on the right. and the guy with the ■■■ is the AA Man who used to patrol that section, on his Motorbike with the box on.Those were the days when you got a salute if you were a member. I,ve got a picture in me mind of little Harry, bawlin as his Mam gave him a cuddle before setting off. Here we are , what seems like 5 minutes later, and he,s now Harry-Long retired. Don,t time fly when yer enjoying yerself? All the Best H
hiya,
buycrider, i think mother did the job for the duration so i was only 3, pre remembering days although by the time the war was over i was 9 so have some fading memories, i can remember my grandmother looking after things cos dad was a driver for the ministry too but long distance on days so i guess the old teddy wasn’t a bad substitute for all the cuddles i missed.
thanks harry long retired.
