My money is about 5.5 tonnes for that coil, obviously caught between drops.

That was the only F88 that Burnholme ever ran, it was an early one, if memory serves I think it was H reg, and shock horror, they bought it new! It stayed on the fleet for well, it must have been 15 years or more, the acryllic sun visor would suggest that the photo is in later life.

Not arguing with you mate, but did he not have an earlier one, the type with the chrome grille, I think the one in the pic is a later model than a 69 H reg, but hey, I may be wrong.

Now you’ve got me thinking here.

You are quite right that the one in the pic is an H reg, and it was always refered to as The 88 but I’m thinking that a chrome grill also rings a bell, on a Newcastle registration.

Somebody in Penrith needs to find a Dixon for a definitive answer.

Have you any ideas on this shot of one of “Jazzers” in DEC Gerald ? Cheers Dennis.

Aye Dennis Thoo’s reet ! Who dropped the bottom plate lying on the ground just to the left of the wagon ? Some of the BRS trunkers from Howgate were known to throw a bottom plate off now and again while travelling through the Lakes.
Cheers, Leyland 600.

You have reminded me of an episode we were involved in through the Lakes in about 73/74, we had loaded two flats with Pig for Fords Dagenham Foundry and when we got back to Milnthorpe Beatrice from JWG had been screaming down the phone that there was pig iron lying on every corner through the Lakes and it had come off our motor/s as we had been the only flats loaded that day ! I quickly got back on to her and assured her very definitely,in no uncertain terms, that nowt had dropped off our trailers and offered to weigh both our motors to prove it ! She was having none of it though so I said well get back to me when you find out who it was ! About half an hour later she came back onto the phone and very sheepishly ( but still unrepentant!) said it had been one of Walter Carefoots who’s tailboard was open and the pig had just been sliding out on corners ! There was a funny sequel to this as I knew a gadgy on the Council who was based at the depot between Windermere and Ambleside and he told me that two Police Mini Vans came into the depot that day with their “arses” dragging on the floor both loaded with Pigs  Cheers Dennis.

This was was in the days before those huge horrible dangerous juggernauts were banned from travelling through the Lakes and the drivers had to do without a pint or two in the Prince of Wales at Grasmere while catching up on the crack from drivers heading south. After a few pints the northbound ■■■■■■■■■ headed for yam never mind being an hour or six over their time. !!!
Happy days,
Leyland 600.

Hi Dennis,
How long would you have kept her on shunting duties for and did you sell them or cut them up yourself?

I love the way the London permission plate is propped up in the windscreen just in case it has to do a quick night trunk into the capital and never mind that it only has one out 4 headlights operable! Robert :sunglasses:

Our Trailer/Tyre fitter used this little motor in the depot as his motive power for a number of years, I just can’t say what it’s fate was as it was still operating in '96 when I left the Group ! Cheers Dennis.

when i first started on the road the old ( ancient ) foden only had one headlight when on dip and that was as much use as a candle in a jam jar . Mind you at the dizzying speed of 32mph there was plenty of time to plan ahead . dave

I drove a Ford 4 D Van at Baxters its the only one they had for multi drop stuff, That had very poor headlights when on full beam, & only one on on dip, Who ever invented these must have had no idea about night driving, Regards Larry.

Back in the early 1960s when I started driving lots of trunkers and others drove on sidelights and one nearside spotlight or flat beam foglight. Lots of wagons from the 1950s still on the road at this time did not have flashing indicators nor brake stop lights and the only indication that such a vehicle in front of you was going to brake or turn off was a couple of off-on flicks of the tail lights. Aye life in the fast lane max speed 35mph at a push but most about 32 mph or even less 28mph for some could be interesting.
Cheers, Leyland 600

Aye Gerald, I think thou was on about the last Foden 8 wheeler thou ran eh! Cheers Dennis.

Dennis, the S21 cabbed Foden I had would do 42mph it was built in 1963 whereas the later ones S80 and 83 fitted with all mod cons would do about 52-53mph.
Cheers. Leyland 600
