I reckon it was an Uldale Stricklands Trader Gerald but then again I could be wrang eh! but I don’t think John and Mary would have ran a “new fangled” diesel Trader more like a petrol engine Morris or Austin normal control sort of motor eh! but then again I thought the Uldale Stricklands were Bedford men ! I can just recall that they got one of the first “new fangled” TK’s in the late 50’s and IIRC it was driven by a gadgy called ?Carruthers frae Ireby. Cheers Dennis.
Hi Bewick and James, I cannot remember any of the Ireby or Uldale Stricklands ever having a Thames Trader, I do recall G.R. Strickland having a TK Bedford. As Dennis says nearly always running petrol engined bonneted Bedfords I was never able to sort out which family was which and where they were based.
Cheers, Leyland 600.

From my distant and juvenile memory Gerald I think John had been part of the Uldale family firm and then in the later 50’s there must have been a Family break up and he started up as J & M Strickland in Ireby where he lived, I think he must have got his “B” licence as part of his pay out as I can just recall him driving one of the bonneted GR tippers in earlier years and his first motor after he left was a new or near new bonneted Morris/Austin petrol engine SWB dropside tipper painted Green Reg. No. EEC ?. I always recall it had a little brass plate on the dash saying " Supplied by Z. Crabtree & Co Ltd Kendal" so it must have been a Morris “badge” I’m not just sure what the model designation was though. Now thinking about it would John have been one of the old GR’s Sons or was he a Brother maybe and was the Strickland that continued with the Uldale side called Clarry? Come on Gerald you’ve lived about the area longer than I ever did eh! Cheers Dennis.

Can I assume that this Marshal would have been “double drive” Tom and which Quarry did he run out of ? A firm I once bought out used to run a number of AEC Marshals all single drives with 27ft flats, they could carry 15 ton at 22 ton GVW which was as good as an 8 wheeler in the mid later 60’s. Cheers Dennis.
Dennis, Like I said I could never sort out who was who in that family and who owned what. Bonneted Bedfords and tipper work just did not interest me back then which contributes to my lack of knowledge on the subject apart from knowing J&M personally and having some tarmacing at home done by John and his team back about1968. I knew there was Clarry and Bill but never knew them. RW would have been the man to ask the man to ask but unfortunatly we can’t.
Cheers Leyland 600.
Hi Tom, That Marshall of Millicans was always a good looking motor, what did they call the man who took over this company and ran a Mammoth Major 8 wheeler then a Scammell Routeman all in the same livery. For the life of me I can’t think of his name yet knew him quite well.
Cheers, Leyland 600

Hiya Gerald, I’m sure John was involved with the Uldale firm up until he went on his own as J & M but I’m not sure which generation but Tom reckons he will come up with the answer which will be interesting no doubt. Might there still be Stricklands operating tippers there abouts ? Cheers Dennis.
the stricklands had a red thames trader phone number lowireby 221 on the door driven by bobby carruthers [shafty] g@r was george @robert [bills dad @uncle green wagon was john@mary @clarey also had a tipper for a while they also had a quarry and ray bowe took over from millicans thats all i no hope it helps
Hi Tom, thats the man I was trying to remember Ray Bowe, he died quite young I recall.
Cheers, Leyland600
