Keswick gravel out of the river next to the Pencil Factory

So what happens to this gravel now Paul ? is it decent stuff and fit to use ? or do you just tek it back up to where’t beck starts and tip it back in eh! Cheers Dennis.

we are carting to armstrongs sand quarry to get screened and crushed

Hi Hodge sounds as if the authorities are using some commonsense at last by recycling the gravel and stone. I had a ride to Cockermouth and Keswick on Saturday afternoon there seems to be a lot of stuff to dig out round the pencil factory. Where will they lead Cockermouth castle to when it falls in the river. There will be some big blocks of stone to deal with then.
Cheers, Leyland 600.

Hi Norman, I think you mean Simon Huntingdon, he has a small garage near the railway station and is a specialist with Range and Land Rovers, The family had a garage and filling station at South End, started by his grandfather then his father and uncle who I know both retired now. There was another brother who I went to school with but was unfortunately killed as a boy in a motoring accident. Their garage was demolished about two years ago and a large development of flats for elderly and and younger folks with various difficulties live The complex only opened just before Christmas. Tek nee notice o Bewick they didn’t larn him to taak reet at Ireby sceul. !!
Cheers, Leyland 600.

Speaking of the “Great man” who is sadly no longer with us here is a shot of one of his ERF’s on the wash at his depot in Penrith. Curly was a great mate of mine as he was to a lot of other hauliers in the days when the industry was full of Characters. Cheers Bewick.

I actually bought J R’s last three motors via a dealer Pal, three P cab Scanias B130 /B131/132 JAO ? all decent motors as they were fairly new but I had to wait about one month for the last one “132” and I think it must have had a Rotweiler living in the cab but we allocated it to a Driver of similar habits and it was a good reliable motor for us.Cheers Dennis.

Dennis , I remember J.Rs running into West ■■■■ Farmers Wigton with a Sentinel underfloor engined six wheeler I think it was, just a boy at the time remember them starting with a lit rag down the air filter. They later ran AEC Mercurys and Marshalls
Also David (Hoppy) Wilson old Dave’s eldest son passed away this week less than a year after his wife Marjorie (Strickland)
Cheers Leyland 600

Hiya Gerald, I never knew J.R. and I never got the full craic about why they packed up but the three Scanias were fairly new when I got them and by what you say about them running a Sentinel years ago mebe he retired and just sold up possibly. Cheers Dennis.

Tidy line up at Swalwell, Regards Larry.
