Holiday of Penrith, had a large fleet of low loaders.

Correct me if im wrong , sure this guy had a cargo unit , used to park it in robsons yard at carlisle but seem to remember it bing navey blue ■■

Used to be boxvans with a blue livery, got taken over by Barnet & Graham, then became Bell Holliday & finally became GW Holliday again green & white livery mainly flats & low loaders.

I took this photo today in Sanquhar and I don’t think in all my time on the road I have ever seen a trailer like this one the deck at the front is fairly level and then it drops down to the end it must have been designed for plant although it had some pallets on but if you look close there is very little clearance at the back tyre. Anybody have any idea what it was for. Eddie.

My first driving job was with Trevor, he put me through my HGV in fact.
He was a likeable bloke, and I enjoyed working for him. I have driven that motor in the pic.
Trevor ran seatbelts from Kangol Carlisle to car factories in UK.
When I worked for him in 79 he had 2 TKs a D series Ford and a Transit pick up, he also had an ERF at one point. He replaced these with Fiats, 2 190/30s and a Daily pick up that he bought from Nicholson & Tuck at Carlisle. One of these Fiats had a Horsebox body detachable from the flatbed which was my motor, I took his harness racing horses on it to Gatwick Airport a few times to send to race venues in Canada.
As Dennis said, he packed in the haulage at Silloth and moved to York, I last saw him at Rothwell truck auction around 86, he was dealing in second hand light commercials at that time.
Anybody got any more pics of Trevor’s motors?

It looks like one of them sliding bogies on it cos the trailer axles look narrow,is that a tool box underneath or power pack?

Anyone heard of Traction & transport services, there was a mention somewhere on Facebook but I can’t see it now .

Ive just heard that a company from ■■■■■■■ called WS Transport has fired up and have some work on flat trailers out of a firm at Topciffe area, Could this be a Stobart firm ■■?, Regards Larry.

Hi Larry Its owned by William Stobart and being run by his son Ed at the helm.Started off doing steel and now venturing into other stuff even subbing to the Stobart Group on the Tesco contract.

Thanks for the Info, Brave adventure in my book Eh, Regards Larry,

I’ve often seen them moving white units around.

Yes apparently they also have some kind of contract with Scania to move new and 2nd hand units about so the story goes

Hello Stansfield

All correct but can also add this information on for anyone who’s interested

WS Transportation is based in Carlisle but it currently does not have any wagons based in ■■■■■■■■ All trucks are based out of three depots Thirsk, Runcorn & Bolton

They are flatbed specialists and basically took on the Stobarts Severfied Rowen steel contract. They also have the Scania Trucks contract which they got off Stobarts

WS current are operation around 40 wagons and they is some new 6 x 4 Scania Toplines for heavy haulage on the way!!

As well as subbing to Stobarts on Tesco & General, in fact Stobarts are subbing to them in particular on the Scania trucks contract and also on the steel!

WS Transportation is controlled by Ed Stobart and William is just a shareholder of the business.

Hope this helps anyone interested

Cheers
Tom

Hello Dennis,

I’ve only just discovered this forum. You probably don’t remember me, but I
ran a couple of Mastiffs out of Bowaters before decamping to the Middle
East for a decade.

Working my way through two or three of the threads, mostly great stuff!

My first truck was a 1962 Leyland Comet. DS 5661. I was going to sell you
the number plate but they wouldn’t transfer it because it was a truck not a
car.

You bought one of the Mastiffs off me as a shunter. I wondered if you had
any photos of it? As a photographer I’ve always made a good truck driver,
so never took one of those trucks or the Comet.

Preferably before you painted it in those garish Bewick colours, when it
was still the understated yellow, with the red radiator.

Mind, a friend did ask me if I was colour blind!

I’ve built a website www.middleeasttruckingstories.co.uk, which has some
dated photos of me which may jog your memory.

Hi Leyland 680,

If you drove a 680 it must have been for TB.

My Dad had a removals and haulage business Bert West for Removals pre nationalisation.

He had a Jensen van that he was selling in the late forties. Brady’s wanted it, but couldn’t afford it!

After denationalisation he bought 2 vans from Haythorn Bros. who had been too small to nationalise, and sold the vans a couple of years later to Alan Cooksey.

Always loved trucks. We lived near Athersmiths ‘Symons’ garage and I can remember them getting REL 207 and REL 208 new - AECs I think.

I applied for an ‘A’ licence, more in hope than anticipation, while I was shifting the timber for my uncle. The hearing was at the town hall. It was refused of course. Jack came across to me afterwards, shook my hand and told me what a favour he was doing me, keeping me out of the business! Wise words, but of course I didn’t take any notice…
