milkmantom He was a right hardy bugger another of his tricks was to pull in to Forton throw open both cab doors and shout right lads shops open and out would come the leather jackets and whatever else he had managed to come by. He was still doing an odd shift for Haulage Express the last time I spoke to him in Dumfries. Eddie.

That Bedford was run by a friend of mine Trevor Brown he was also into Harness racing same as me,he left Silloth and moved over to Kirk Hammerton where he had married a farmers daughter, this in the 80’s so it’s a long while ago,not just sure how many motors he ran,2 or 3 maybe.Cheers Bewick.

Obituary—I’ve just been told to-day that Bob Brady Snr passed away on Saturday, aged 92 so the Big’un as he was universally known had a good innings,he had to overcome adversity in his early life as he was only partially sighted until he was about 15 but he sure made up for that in later life,he could spot a soft tyre yards away ! he always bought units and trailers in sixes, usually screwing the salesmen down on the price of one then saying,Oh! Son (called everyone Son!) and I’ll have six !!!In later years when the family had split Young Bob his eldest son re-branded the firm T.Brady & Son by knocking off the “s” on the end of Sons !! Mind you it was always said that the Big’un was indeed the “s” on the end of Sons but make no mistake he was a very shrewd operator as a Haulier and played a far bigger part in the origional firm of T.Brady & Sons than was maybe evident, his younger brother Jackie was the fron’t man and drove the firm forward but the Big’un was always there supporting his brother and the Big’un bought all the motors and was always well in with the Shipyard and the Steel Works and later on British Cellophane when they opened their new plant in Barrow in the late 50’s.When he left the firm he carried on running Marshes Sass a local pop manufacturer and for many years he was Chairman and a main benefactor of Barrow Rugby League team.He sure was a larger than life character who I was priviledged to call a friend. :frowning: Sad day.Bewick.

R.I.P Big`un :frowning:

Hi Dennis, Sorry to read of Bob Brady seniors death, I knew him back about 1967/8 when I used to load wood pulp off them fot TYhames Board at Workington or British Rayophane as it then was at Wigton. He sure was a character and well known throughout the haulage industry.
RIP Bob.
Also not mentioned as yet on TNUK, Wilson Glencross cattle haulier from Abbey Town died at home in Wigton last Wednesday 10th Sept, his funeral was yesterday 15th Sept Wilson was 94 and well known in livestock circles.
Cheers Leyland 600.

There was a driver from Dumfries name of Campbell ■■ cant remember his second name but PROBLEM CHILD was his nick name he drove for a long time with a Robsons Subbie and for a while it was an F88 in Robsons colours that he drove. I am sure someone will remember him he always parked his lorry when at home at the bottom bridge on the whitesands I came through one morning and two of Robsons own motors were parked in his spot and he had written on piece of cardboard RIGHT PARK HERE AGAIN DRIVER AND ITS WAR signed THE PROBLEM. Eddie.

Now theres a name I remember , the problem child, what a character, got a vague memory as a kid of hi m grabbing a hold ov haemeshes beard in carlisle and sayin ya areet my wee scotish fella and harry duely obliged grabbing his knackers saying , I lad now wa no gonna hurt each other are we pal , as a kid I had a gud little cheeky laugh , god the guy was mad a crackin laugh sure he left after I started in 84 … regards jon… did he not have like a double barelled name , summat cambell ■■

Dear oh! dear we’ve got the wrong end of the stick again Lads regarding my previous post, there sure are some touchy buggers on TN.In order to clarify the point I was making was merely the comparison between “CG” “to-day” and me when I was his age can I further say.For the sake of neutrality lets assume “CG” spots W.H. Malcolm or Pollocks Scotrans :open_mouth: so that is as close as he gets to the transport world as “a spotter”.Well at his age I was working anywhere from 70 and up to (sometimes) 100 hrs a week as a trailer mate and don’t get me wrong there was plenty of others in the job doing similar hours so I’m not blowing my own trumpet but merely stating how things were during that era.Can I also demolish another misconception,I have no axe to grind against “fast eddie” and never have had, they didn’t bother Bewick Transport ever, besides the fact that as we were mainly Paper hauliers and we used flat platforms and, dare I utter the words, sheets and ropes  I wasn’t aware that “fast eddie” operated flats so that may account for our paths never crossing  However we did start to build up our tautliner fleet quite considerably from the mid 80’s but still the last new flats joined the fleet in 1990 as a lot of our paper traffic still required flat platforms. With regard to my comment about Curtain Pullers and steering wheel jockeys well that seems to be about the kindest description from what I see to-day.To-days drivers can’t go to the toilet unless they ask permission and even VOSA take the view that a driver requires to be instructed how to secure a load inside a curtainsider. In my day load security was solely the responsibility of the driver and if it fell off into the road the driver got done ! The Ministry of Transport (as it was then) didn’t go about trying to tell drivers of yesteryear how to do their jobs ! :open_mouth:Now can I refer you to “H”'s post and lets keep things light and not “take a powder” when the dreaded name of “the fast one” pops up eh!What a grand day,it’s sun shining here now what can I do ? Oh! I’ll drive up to the motorway bridge and start spotting anybodies motors but the “unmentionables”      Cheers Bewick.

Gud on ya bewick , think people of the fast one brigade seem to forget they started with a lot of sub contract work and then showed no loyalty or respect to the people who got him on the ladder of greatness and pulled the carpet from beneath them aswell. Hence a little anomosity , but as we all know its a cut throat game not the first and wont be the last , the guy has done remarkably welland certainly keeps tounges rollin, so gud on ya , somebody ill swallow them up one day as many suffered before them ,any photos of a robson daf 2300 border warrior nockin aboot , ■■ Gis a set of ropes n sheets any day you can keep ya spangly tautliners , or I and the wind and rain , errh maybe not but at least I can do it , chheers bewick regards jonny ao
