Hiya L600,it always intreauged me as to the hold BRS Howgate had on most of the traffic out of W.■■■■■■■ from the late 40’s to the late 60’s ,was it political maybe with W.■■■■■■■ being solid Labour country ? Obviously when BRS began to “shrivel” up where general haulage was concerned there was quite a tussle as the former BRS subbies set about gaining the various seams of traffic that became available,i.e. Marchon,( S.Kelly esq. £££ ) Workington Steel Works,DEC ( Guess who got this one
)So we had H&M.E.,JWG, Patty,Jazzer,H&L,not forgetting my favourites “ADB & Sons” and a number of others moving seamlessly into the void left by BRS,but lets face it the BRS subbies had been propping up the nationalised operation for years and had been giving the various customers a level of service that BRS on their own could never have achieved.Cheers Bewick.

Are the payloads the same on these two 8 wheelers Paul? Cheers Dennis.
Hi Bewick, Whenever a rush job occurred on the BRS books they always called upon one of the merry band of owner drivers or small firms you mention knowing they would deliver first thing next morning regardless of where it was situated in the UK mainland. I remember being phoned by RW one Friday evening when I was still a 19 year old apprentice in Carlisle and finished work for the week end. The conversation went " Will you go with faather (ADB) te neet to Bridgewater with a load of Quaker Oats delivery in the morning driver Freddy M (you will remember him) has renaged and wont go. So off I went up to Ireby and away we went me sitting shotgun until we got to Castle Inn. “Right"says AD " Thoo wants te larn hoo tae drive a wagin well git theesel in this side” I was transferred into the driving seat of the Trader and off we went changing over now and again until reaching Bridgewater BRS depot about 8-0am on the Saturday morning. Once tipped we set off back still taking turns arriving back at Ireby about 8-0 pm. Remember this was 1960, no motorways or by passes then and better stil only paper log sheets written in in pencil !!! The good old days.
Cheers , Leyland 600
Now that would be quite an interesting experience for you L600 Now lets see, arrive back in Ireby at 8pm,I bet Mary gave you a slap up supper plus AD gave you a £5 pound note ? well it was only 1960 and a fiver in the hand to an apprentice engineer in those days was half a weeks wages I guess
And I would hazzard a guess you still have the same fiver in your wallet to-night
Cheers Bewick.
Hodge, do you get the same payload in the Transit van that’s usually parked in Prospect as you do the two 8 leggers above?
Nice to see the pics of the Leylands though, I still have a soft spot for them following my dads old Constructor 24.23, one of the best 6 wheelers ever made imo.

Bet the 05 is pre ad-blue and all that balls (my dads is the same age and no ad-blue) so that alone will make a big weight saving. Also depending if Paul specs Autotailgates or Electric sheets. Both weren’t required by most quarries at 05, but are now.
EDIT: I’m a muppet, I read it as the 05 being lighter. Is impressive how you’ve made the newer one lighter, thinner body or other methods?

Haha, teach me not to just skim read the topic
And on the start thing, we’re researching that currently.
The problem with most tipper men, and I was as bad myself when I started, is that they only look at the tare weight. Put a trailing axle on a
Ford Transit and plate it at 26 tonnes and they would be queuing to buy it.
