Being a member state of anywhere has nothing to do with it, it is classed as a weapon in the UK. Coppers carry guns in France and Germany as routine, we don’t.
The firearm laws are made in our parliament, not in another country.
They used to sell this stuff in La Jonquera years ago, along with a load of other defensive stuff like 18" Rambo knives for buttering your toast, telescopic steel police batons for swatting the mosquitoes, flick knives for cleaning your ears or trimming your nails. They also sold some pretty nifty leather jackets and coats
And those “Trucker” wallets with about 100 compartments in to stash all those Lira,Escudoes,Francs and Lira.They had animal fur on some of them and metal chains about 20 feet long,just in case you would attract attention and someone think you were loaded with running money for 3 to 4 weeks away.Would stash my cash in the cab,secret hidey holes,much safer.
Being a member state doesn’t mean you have to have the same laws- if it did, then we in the UK would be driving on the right for example.
As to the other point, I always think of them things as a chain with a wallet on, rather than the other way around.
I always thought those wallets on chains were so naff it was unreal and them bloody clogs with fur 
Back onto the subject of CS gas, I can just confirm from personal experience that a pair of thieving Ukrainians soon quick go away when given a facefull of the stuff.
You can still buy it in Calais on the Z.I. des Dunes. Or so I’m told.

You could a couple of weeks ago and Tazer guns.

Have also seen blank immitation starting pistols,crossbows,in any French hunting sports shop.
