Crimewatch - Lorry Hijack

At around 1pm on 9 March 2009, a lorry was hijacked as it approached a roundabout on Bluebell Way in Preston, Lancashire. The lorry cabin was pulling a 40-ft trailer, containing high-value spools of copper wire used for the automotive industry.

The lorry driver stopped when a blue Peugeot 406 Saloon swerved in front of his vehicle. Two men jumped out of the car. Both were wearing suits with high-visibility jackets over the top and carrying clipboards with the distinctive VOSA (Vehicle Operating Services Authority) label on them. The driver of the Peugeot remained in the car.

The offenders claimed to be VOSA officials, and the lorry driver thought they were going to carry out a roadside safety check. He realised soon after the two men entered the vehicle that they were trying to hijack it. They threatened him with a taser gun and told to drive away immediately. They took his mobile phone, dismantled it and threw it out of the window.

The driver was forced to drive more than 100 miles to St Anne’s Road in Bloxwich, Walsall and told to park up. Here, another lorry unit and driver arrived and disconnected his trailer, making away with the cargo of copper wire.

The ordeal was far from over for the driver however, who was made to continue driving for another hour to Tewkesbury. Here, he was made to pull into a quiet slipway at the junction of the A38 and the M50, where the offenders bound him with tape and tied his wrists to the steering wheel with cable ties.

They warned him to make no attempts to move until they had left. The driver immediately tried to summon the attention of another person parked in the layby by flashing his lights and sounding his horn. Eventually this witness came to see what was going on, and saw the offenders run from the lorry and into the Peugeot which sped away.

Just seen it :open_mouth: What an ordeal beig made to drive a Premium! Seriously though its scary how easily you cold be taken in :open_mouth: Be vigilant everyone!

i just seen that myself

LOCK THEM CAP DOORS so the sods can’t just jump in thats a tip from me

and did you see the state of the car they pulled him in■■? would you ever stop for a car like that when you guys know VOSA and Police use marked up cars

Mick

Sorry but watching that last nite I wouldn’t have stopped if VOSA wanted me that bad I would have waited until the police were involved I have never seen a VOSA car other than a Ford people carrier or estate, and all these are written up like a sore thumb, and I do agree on locking of the doors. VOSA ARE PROFESSIONAL and I don’t think they would try to stop a truck like that !!! :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Shouldnt make light of this but was watching with the mrs last night and she got in a panic telling me to be careful etc but i drive a refuse bulker on landfill work but she was adimant .

Didnt adimant sing Stand And Deliver ■■? Very Apt

i like how the guy who saved him, was on the phone as he pulled in to the layby. TUT TUT

i know its brave saying this in a nice warm house on a keyboard without a tazer in your back but would it not be possible to attract someones attention while on the motorway. like side swiping a large van or something and driving like a bell end to attract someones attention who would call the rozzers and then they stop you, somehow?

do you reckon they would tazer you as you were driving? if they were sat on the bunk without a seat belt on, i know i wouldnt if i was a robber!

i guess it must be terrifying to happen to you and i hope the driver is ok but would you seriously stop for a car driving like that and jumping out saying VOSA, i know i wouldnt!

it looked like something out of the sweeney lol

I really struggle to understand why any driver would stop under those circumstances!!! VOSA do give advice about who and what should be stopping you. We dont carry around A4 size Warrant cards, we dont tape a drivers hands to the wheel ( even if hes over his hours )but I do personally wear the furry hat so accurately represented in the short film.

Very disappointed that Crimewatch didnt show the VOSA film that tells you all you need to know. It is available on the BBC site though.

Well it’s about time VOSA were told, they no longer have the right to stop hgv’s. marked police vehicles should be the only ones with the right to stop trucks. all the others should be run off the road.
I’ve noticed vosa pulling trucks into laybys, isn’t it obvious, that they are bogus. No weighbridge. No facilities.
There are places you stop, and places you don’t. There are drivers, and there are tossers. some bring it on themselves.
