Went to the car show at John Smiths in Tadcaster today and saw this motor. The engine (Gardner) is underslung on its side like they fit coach engines to make the cab big enough for the driver and 2 dray men.

Hi Carl, as far as I know Atkinson only built a few underslung engined dray lorries, that one belongs to Ken Longstaff who used to work for John Smiths a long time ago. I can’t remember if they only built six and John Smiths had three of them but it was only a small number.
If you spoke to Chris Gardner I,m quite sure he could tell you the full story.
Regards Tony H.
Stamper of Penrith has one it’s been on the vintage rally scene for years. Eddie.
Low Reduction
Was this an attempt by Atkinson to make a competitor for ERF’s Sabrina?

When i used to go to Atkinsons at Window Lane in the early 60’s they had a 4wheeler with a bow fronted 3seater cab. It had a 5 HLW engine in, they used it for collecting parts etc. They used HLW’s in their bus chassis.

Maybe not the right site, but a few photos of Atkinson PSV chassis, with Gardner underslung engines (HLW’s).
Although some buses were built on truck chassis with vertical engines. Sunderland Corporation got the last PSV chassis built for the home market in 1964.

The Stamper’s one came originally for the works fleet Kenny (at Winery Lane, by the way).
