just do what I did £5000 on the card spend spend spend then when you’ve been given one the other companies will be falling over themselves to give you more £35,000 in total before I went bankrupt and what a great time I had ? only took me 2 years after bankruptcy to get credit again ? go for it as long as you don’t own your own house its like free money ? …
Free Money? Approximately 120,000 people a year go bankrupt, so 35,000 x 120,000 = £4.2billion. A year. Every year. Remember the credit crunch? Good giggle that, eh? People like you caused it, that’s why the economy’s Donald Ducked and stuff costs more while we get paid less. Free money! Buffoon!
On topic, pay it off regular and don’t use it to pay for stuff you want, only stuff you need.
ps before someone launches into me I know some go bankrupt through no fault of their own and they probably don’t all involve card misuse. Free money, good gods. I suppose you’ve claimed all the mis-sold PPI back as well?
not only the ppi my dear boy but bankruptcy for a second time … I don’t know about you my dear boy but I look after me and up yours if you don’t enjoy free money as I do …
I’m going to frame this reply (though I suspect it is a troll) - just shows what has gone totally wrong with this country & society as a whole. I’m glad I’m way past being surprised/concerned.

you sound about as concerned as the bankers that shafted us all… millions in bonuses then millions more when they sack them… 10 billion in foreign aid whilst our old folk freeze or starve to death this winter … please please forgive me if I don’t fall in with your perfect society but to be quite honest I live for my family and not yours…

All well and good but if you ever make or come in to money down the line they can claim a chunk back.
and if you haven’t realised it yet im winding people up as I always do ? life is just too serious and we need to let our hair down and not get too worked up over other peoples posts

Ah, that old chestnut. Make a complete ■■■ of yourself, then when the realisation of what a ■■■ you have made of yourself sets in, claim it was all a joke.
Karl86:
I personally won’t ever get one. If you can’t afford something don’t buy it I certainly would rather go without then start paying over the odds for something when the interest kicks in. However I did have my pay pal account hacked In the summer with over a grand coming out off my current account which I was lucky to get back my mum has a credit card so any online purchases now I use hers and give her the cash. And don’t get drawn into the old “you need a credit card to build your credit rating bs” , I’ve just secured a mortgage on a house and am keeping my flat I own to rent I’m 27 never had a loan car finance or anything so my credit rating should be [zb] but obv it’s not. It’s not what you earn but what you do with it, If you can’t afford something wait until you can no one can come and take it off you then.

Why not just get your own then.
Because I don’t want or need one. The only thing I think cc are any good for is online purchases and the once in a blue moon online purchase I make doesn’t justify me needing or wanting one.
To go right back to the OP - If you need to ask here whether it’s a good idea to get one, you probably shouldn’t get one. If you need someone to point out the potential pitfalls, you probably shouldn’t get one. If you are not totally, 100% certain in your own mind what you may or may not be letting yourself in for, you probably shouldn’t get one. If you think it might be handy “to cover an emergency” you probably shouldn’t get one. Even worse, if you think it would be useful for “the odd treat” then you definitely shouldn’t get one!
Go get yourself a copy of “Money for Life” by Alvin Hall. Read it and understand it.

Ahhhhh you’ve just jogged my memory there roymondo, is he the black fella with the strange laugh?? I carnt for the life of me remember where I have seen him on tv but if it’s the same fella he certainly gave good advice. I might have a look at that book myself.

I’m applying for my first credit card tomorrow wich I’ve been told will more or less be accepted for it, I’ve never had 1 before it will be 9months interest free from account opening , other than leaving it with the other half are they bad or are they handy ? I’m not getting 1 for any particular reason I just thought could come in handy
Smoggie, some good advice you’ve been given on here as per.but only you know how savvy you are with money,so my advice would be to take a good look at the martin Lewis website and familiarise yourself with both sides of the coin. Good luck with your choice.

That’s the bloke - He presented the BBC TV series “Your Money or Your Life”, where they featured real-life “case studies” of people whose personal finances were in a very precarious situation (even though they all appeared to be doing more-or-less OK).
Yes that’s it roymondo, now I remember, I think he was trying to get financial education into schools as well, interesting programme that. I’m gonna have a look at downloading that book as well.cheers.

I have one, I pay for all my parking when on nights out on it, I get the money back in my wage slip the following week, I pay my card off straight away and it, it cost me nothing and it leaves my wages for me to spend.
I think if you use them wisely there good, if you get one and think… Oooooh I’ve got £2000 to spend, go out and buy some new golf clubs, new clothes a big TV, then pay off £25 a month, there not for you.
There also good for emergencys, if my car fails it’s MOT and it’s going to cost £400 to fix I can always fall back on the credit card if I need to.
Just remember fella that all you are doing is borrowing money from your future self so next months wages will have a chunk taken out to repay this and if you only make the minimum repayments then for evermore.
Compound interest is leach unless it’s on investments.
They’re very easy to max out without really realising you’re doing it, if you’re a bit daft with money like I was. I started with one with a £500 limit, and within a couple of years I was up to the thick end of ten grand in debt on two separate cards. I was lucky enough to be gifted enough to pay most of it off, but I am still amazed how quickly the debts mount up when you’re spending no more than a hundred here or there. I’ve got less than a grand left now, on an interest free card, and once that’s gone, I won’t be having another card.
They’re undoubtedly useful financial tools if you’re reasonably savvy with money, but as others have said, if you have to ask then the answer’s probably “no”.

I would rather lose a couple of months’ interest on £400 of my savings (i.e. about 50p) than expose myself to potentially paying several pounds in interest to the CC company.

You may not want one, but to buy online, you use your mums. So you need one to buy online.
Earlier in the thread was a recommendation to use a credit card for purchases on E bay.
I would have thought that giving your card details to anyone with an E Bay account is a very dodgy thing to do.
I always buy through PayPal or similar on EBay, that way the supplier never gets your details but has to deal through a middleman.
