I don’t think DRL’s have anything to do with the EU as you can still buy brand new cars without them. Bought the Mrs a new Kia Venga last September and that hasn’t got them.
It is EU crap
From Wikipedia - European Union Directive 2008/89/EC requires all passenger cars and small delivery vans first type approved on or after 7 February 2011 in the EU to come equipped with daytime running lights. The mandate was extended to trucks and buses in August 2012.
Not entirely sure what that means, is it cars made or designed after 2011?
It is also not law to use them, and in my wifes car they can be disabled. However disabling them may be unwise, I read in the insurance documentation that “driver Assistance Systems” must be in full working order" so could switching DRLs off invalidate a claim?

I think that these daytime running lights are that common now that they no longer ‘stand out in the crowd’ like they did a few years ago when only Volvo etc fitted them. A bit like H&S vests, now that every Tom, ■■■■ and Harry (plus every schoolkid) wears one they just blend in with everyday life.Pete.
They take away the option of standing out from the crowd, Motorbikes are now lost amongst all the other lights and cyclist / pedestrians become less visible.
Eyesight tests for all motorists would have made more sense.
