I fitted a new crank in a 10 litre ■■■■■■■ that was in a Foden 4300 tractor, the part was 5 grand without any labour, gasket sets, shell bearings or anything els, that was 23 years ago.

You sure about that? You could have bought another truck for that money and certainly a recon engine. Not sure why you’d bother at that price + cost of the other bits + down time.

Yep, that was from ■■■■■■■ UK in Slough back when I worked for BRS. Il never forget it to this day when I read the invoice.
The driver in question was travelling along the M4 and hit some stray road cones which knocked off the oil filter. Before he had time to get to the HS and switch off, it had spun half a dozern shells and totalled the engine.
I can understand that happening - but £5k just for a crank in 1989 ? Think sombebody seen BRS coming.

About 30 year ago i broke a crank in a 111 scania,fitter came out heard it knockin put his foot on the clutch and could feel it through the pedal .2000 pound for a new crank but my local garage got a secondhand one 150 pound .good days…
