crank coupling

does anyone know what crank coupling is?, as we carn’t split couple any more

AFAIK it’s where you back under the trailer so you engage the pin, then hit shunt and swing around so the unti leaves a big enough gap for you to do the lines. We do it when picking up a trailer with a 45ft box on and no neck extension, so split coupling is of no help.

Assuming there’s enough air left in it

True. If there isn’t, you have to do the crawling thing and get the red line on…Or make sure the Gaffer isn’t looking and just drag the barsteward. :stuck_out_tongue:

Why can’t you split couple any more?

Split coupling and Cranked coupling are detailed in a guide produced by the SOE in collaboration with the Health & Safety Exec.

If the HSE consider the procedure acceptable then what is so specialised about your companies operation that they no longer permit it?

I’ll email you a copy.

split coupling is dangerous :astonished:

so all you have to be is very careful

imo its less dangerous than trying to put on uk airlines from the ground position as you are expected to do when the triler has a sliding rail

now if they want to fit ghastly palm coupling

On one site (HJH Wigan) a shunter saw me split coupling. He came over and spoke to me. The guy was fine with me, but told me that it wasn’t allowed on their site & if a boss saw me, there’d be problems.

I’d just so love to couple it up, then get the guy that made the rule to climb up, squeeze in & connect the 5 susies.

Palm couplings are easy to do from the side if room is tight as you arent pushing against the pressure. (just remember to spit on the rubbers 1st!)

and in my opinion, palm couplings should become a standard fitment.

Im agreeing with you again :stuck_out_tongue: They are far easier and cleaner to use. I cant understand how the UK is the only country in Europe to still use C Type fittings

I made the weekly ‘near miss’ report at Walkers crisps in Warrington after the driver trainer spotted me split coupling, i did enjoy seeing myself up on a board in the traffic office !! A few months later they got a new fleet of Mercs with sliding (air operated) fifth wheel couplings so they could couple up with out getting in a gap a skeleton couldn’t.
I, apparently always ‘crank couple’, not sure what it is but i have overheard drivers say ‘look at that crank coupling’ and pointed at me.
