cpc query

if a driver wants to return to driving having held a ce licence for many years pre cpc era, what do they need to do now to get a cpc card having never done any training to date?

Get a medical and a Cpc I’d think and that’d do it.

You can either do mods 2 and 4 which are both tests that can be passed or failed or you an do 35 hours of DCPC periodic training.

If you go for the 35 hours training your best bet would be to search your local area for the cheapest courses, courses have to be JAUPT approved to count towards DCPC training hours.

Just Google or Bing “Driver CPC periodic training location” (change location to your location)

CHOICE -
Pass the 2 initial tests mods 2 + 4 but they can be failed
OR
do the 35 hours periodic attendance training where they can find the cheapest 7 hour course and do it 5 times if they want to

I am trying to do the mod 2 and 4 the mod 2 is stupidly easy the mod 4 seems expensive if you have anything about you or what it is.

I couldn’t face 35 hours sat in a class room.

Its a bit of a crash course to make sure you know how to check the truck and do basics, plus theres usually a bit on restraints. Headache is you’ve got to know how to answer the questions rather than actually know useful stuff.

ie, its another useless idea to make money that teaches nothing useful.

As for mod2 and mod4, if you’ve got a pre 1997 licence it can take weeks of hassle to book them so would always do the 35 hours.

…if you’ve driven a truck before. To someone who hasn’t I disagree and it does teach something useful. It gets them to look at a plating certificate, consider what they need to be doing before they even start to load/unload, that they need to consider how they’re loading the vehicle and how to restrain that load.

having just sat the module 2 its a joke.

I did exactly the same, returning to drivng after a 20 year gap. I did the 35 hours and I’m glad I did, as I’d forgotten loads, had never seen a digitach and picked up loads of useful stuff from other drivers on the course.

I’m doing same, though after a 10 year absence pursuing another career. CPC periodic training booked for end of month.

And I agree, happy to learn of any new methods and practices - ie. changes to drivers hours, digital tacos, new safety regs etc. Roadside checks I hear are more common now so no harm being re-aquainted with things.

I don’t however welcome forking out the fee (though managed to find a course for under £400) and 5 days seems a bit of overkill to learn this stuff. Could easily fit into 2-3 days max from speaking to a couple of driver friends.

Interested to know how you got on finding work, MNLH, or anyone else returning to driver after a break. One agency I spoke to on the phone said I might find it like being a rookie again getting the work due to insurance changes. In other words I will have to take anything just to clock up the hours.

Not sure what to think. I reckon it would suit the agencies so they would want to put this out there. Is there a driver shortage or not?

Sorry, should probably start a new thread on this last issue.
