CPC confusion

I wonder if anyone can help me?
I am looking at a change of career & have held my C+E since 2002.
I’m told that I can’t do my CPC training as I got my licence through the Army so didn’t do part 2 or 4 of the test!
My licence shows a full entitlement as far as I can see, so don’t get it.

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

You’ve been misinformed. You have the choice of achieving driver cpc by taking and passing Mods 2 and 4 OR completing 35 hours periodic training.

Pete

thanks for putting it straight for me Pete. Looks like I’ll be spending 35 hours early next year doing some training.

Why not do Modules 2 & 4? It’s only two days instead of five, and cheaper too!

Can be about the same price
The downside of doing tests is that they can be failed

Sorry yes, ‘normally’ cheaper would’ve been better wording. Get on a group discounted booking and should be similar price.

Pass rates for Mod 2 & 4 are spectacularly high though. [emoji3]

Thanks for the further advice, I recon that if I had more experience of commercial driving I’d go for the shorter option. but maybe 5 days of training might do me some good. Digi tacos, drivers hours etc…

After more advice!!!
I learnt and have always driven in wagon & drag, ŵould it be worth getting additional training in artics or should I just get on with an agency and go for it?

Rooky questions I’m sure but it’s a bit of a rough transition from my current job in the military to commercial driving.

Is it because the opening posted passed his test in 02 that he can choose the mod 2 & 4 route or the 35 hrs? I have class 1 as of last year but no cpc modules can I go straight for the 35 hours and get the entitlement

You need to have passed your CAR test before 1997 to have right to do the “periodic” (35 hours) training.
The OP stated he passed his C+E in 2002, but didn’t say when he passed his car test…

The OP had a HGV licence before the driver CPC started in 2009 so he had acquired rights to the DCPC until it ran out in 2014, as he hasn’t yet completed the 35 hours training he can choose to do either mods 2 and 4 or the 35 hours periodic training.

I don’t know how long you’ve had HGV entitlement but if you passed the car test after 1st January 1997 and never passed a HGV test before September 2009 you will need to do mods 2 and 4.

If I was in your position I would have a bit of training in an artic - mainly for peace of mind and confidence. But many folks have gone straight from drawbar to artic with reportedly little difficulty.

Most trainers with artics will offer this training.

Ah, I thought I was straight but…
I passed my car licence in 2000 ( late starter), so the way I see it I need to do both 2&4 and 35 hours CPC?

No. You have the choice of Mods 2 and 4 OR 35 hours. You held your LGV licence before Sept 2009 giving you acquired rights.

Pete

Thanks Pete, got it now.

If it was easy it wouldn’t be worth doing eh!

Hello mate.

I got out forces 2 year ago I was in same bout.
I done the mod 2 and 4 was easy.
Mod 2 was half hour multi choice that cost bout £40 if I can remba.
Mod 4 was half hour that again was a bit of a joke to be honest think was bout £150 if can remba because you need pay to rent truck for the hour.

Don’t waste your resettlement money or time doing that.

I said to lad on here other day do a mobile crane course or something different that pays better and use the Hgv as a back up as there loads work for drivers.
As you have had your licence for years and over 25. You won’t have same problem as new civy drivers finding work.

Just be honest when going for interviews and 9/10 the company will teach you on the job.

What wagon n drags and size of trucks where u driving in forces?

Thanks for the advice moocher,
like a lot I of people I know I learnt in a wagon & drag at red rose , I’ve mainly driven Daf towing trailers / FEPS and had a shot or two in SV but driving is not my full time job.
I just want a change of scene when I get out & figured I could use what I already have. I figure that I can use the rest of my resettlement on something else and if it all falls through or takes time to get a job I can drive to make ends meet. Or I might even enjoy driving full time.

My first civy driving job was in a wagon and drag bout 18 month ago.
I had drove daf and feps a couple times on exercise and told my employer I could drive a wagon n drag.
I Only drove heavy few times in bout 5 year when done my test on airfield on camp.
Never drove much after that till civy street.
First day I jumped in a scania R480 wagon n drag with extension out. ■■■■ me that was a very steep learning curve.

I would do something else and use driving as a back up.
That’s what I did and it’s paid bills a few times.

Driving is ok. But if you wanna make decent money you need to work a lot hours and a lot nights out to make the money up unless you do something really specialised.
General will roughly pay £10ph give or take depending what part of country your in. £25-30 night out money.
It’s not hard work a lot of the time you wait wait and wait a while longer.

Moocher, Thanks for the heads up & words of wisdom. I’m sure I don’t need to tell you how stressful getting out & finding a job is, so you have put my mind at ease a bit.
