Big engine just to haul mobile homes but saying that , they may have used it general haulage.

Even more reason for better brakes !!!

Good point there .

My lad knew Jack, they went to school together. What wasn’t in that report was also that he wasn’t insured because the company had a policy that only covered age 25 and over and Jack wasn’t the only one under that age.

It kind of makes me mad when I hear people banging on about how we should go back to the good old days because this is precisely how a lot of companies used to operate back in those supposed good old days - “Wheels still turning? Crack on drive.”

The guys giving it the large one of boasting of one hits to Italy or Spain soon burnt themselves out due to frying their nervous system due to lack of sleep and a diet of caffeine and other illegal substances to keep them awake for four days .
Funny enough I would never see them again.
The hauliers and drivers that did the job legally lost out to one hitters on fuses and wires to show rest or breaks while driving and using CB radio to communicate with other drivers to get an advanced warning of a police control but unaware the authorities understand English and overheard them bragging of one hits without sleeping.
Back then you could run bent but now with ANPR and the paper trail of ferry booking times, weigh bridge times , tipping and reload times and cctv of exactly what time you are there, there’s no way of blagging your way out of it .
Buy your paper, coffee and ■■■■ at the garage, it’s on the bank statement when you are there , hence how Boyles brothers got five years each for fraud by throwing away the tachograph machines and forced drivers to work 22 hours non stop , no breaks, no rest , crack on .

Haulage company owner and lorry driver jailed over M62 crash that killed two men - Hull Live

Thread is here : viewtopic.php?f=2&t=154068
:unamused:

I saw the remains of the cab of a Burlington Ocean Express artic that crashed on a bend coming out of tunnel near Burgos, the cab reduced to a few feet and reports that the driver and co driver both died of heart attacks as they saw what was about to happen.

A guy I knew who crashed in the mountain range of the Carolinas on the dual road from Madrid to Malaga and was beheaded in the crash in his Ford Transcontinental, the Guardia Civil could not find the remains of his body for a while but local media speculated he was speeding in heavy precipitation and road works , Colin his name.

The old road from Irun to Pamplona used to be hair pin bends so tight as you went around a bend you could see the back of the trailer at 45 degrees angle and another colleague died there .

My first trip to Spain was in the late 1970s.When more Brits started going there in the 80s there was a frequent complaint that the Spanish descended hills too slow with their retarders.Lots of Brits came unstuck because it’s not like an M62 type descent and letting it roll.
Pamplona to Irun is a nice road now with the tunnels but,as tarmaceater said,it used to be a bit twisty.

Brake fade deaths were common on the old road from the Spanish and Portuguese border at Villar Formosa to Averio in Portugal on the dreaded IP 5, Spanish drivers used to have their drivers door open ready to bail out if their brakes faded and
numerous wooden crosses and shrines with candles and photos of the deceased were everywhere on that road .

And having a selection of stolen credit cards also helped things along at the pumps :unamused:

Tony from Claudes truck stop did time for fraud on the fuel pumps at Saint Genis de Saintonge , the village where Colin parked his truck at the weekend.

And the trick of coming on and off the Italian toll motorway to avoid paying.
For Portugal I would give a bank card that the tollbooth didn’t accept as it’s foreign to them , then fill in a declaration form saying you will post the toll money as had no means to pay .

Or drive non stop through the Via Verde green lane .

Admittedly I was in my Spanish reg.car, but last time i drove to Portugal(Albufeira) the toll equipment was automatic gantries.I went to a post office to pay and I was told the tolls apply only to Portuguese nationals not foreigners.Heard nothing since.
