Covid 19 shielding

Swordsy:
Just curious, I thought the 80% furlough pay was if your employer had no job for you, and was claiming 80% of your pay from the govt, to keep your job open and you stay at home, ie the coronavirus job retention scheme.

I thought if you were advised to shield, that is basically going on the ‘sick’ where you would get either CSP or SSP depending on your firm and what your sick record was.

A guy at our place has done it, and he’d had a couple of weeks off in Jan, using his sick pay, and as far as i’m aware is on ssp for 12 weeks now.

Please correct me if 'im wrong in any of the above

No, that’s how it is for me. 95 per week ssp and 670 per month universal credit. Bit of a shock to the system but doable. Oh, that thousand or so per month includes rent and council tax, but it is possible to defer some of it for three months.

If you are shielding due to advice from the NHS then you’re company is entitled to claim 80% of your wages through the job retention scheme. This is also the case for employees that need to take time off to look after their kids due to the schools being off, I fall into the latter category and a couple of mates at work are shielding and we all get the grant. Wether or not your company applies for it is a different matter entirely.
It’s all on the government website.

I also don’t understand these guys that want to back to work and put themselves at risk when they’ve been advised by medical professionals to stay at home.
I’ve been off for 5 weeks on 80% and loving it and I am by no means a lazy worker. My daughter stays with me all week, we do schoolwork, take our daily exercise, sit in the garden in the sun and spend loads of quality time together and when she’s at her mums at the wknd I just chill out and enjoy having sod all to do.
