I know you say its empty, but the size of it alone might mean most couriers wont touch it. Might be best put on a pallet and sent through a pallet network. That might be the best and cheapest way.
You may think the drum is empty, but it’s actually full of something that could be just fresh air or the fumes remaining from whatever was in there and could be awfully dangerous!! Sounds to me like the sender wants to get rid of it, why■■?
When I needed a 45 gal drum for a barbecue I got it from a local garage for free, they let me cut it in half on-site and then it went in the back of my Vectra hatchback with the seats down… Job done

Its reminding me of an episode of ‘Only Fools And Horses’ when Del was trying to get rid of some ‘harmless’ drums for someone, and managed to rope his old pal Denzel with his van to help him. Look at how that ended up!!!

A few years back I had a regular load out of a company called Gainsford Drums in Waltham Forest, they recycled 45gal drums and IBC’s that had previously contained chemicals of various types. I hated going in that place, the smell made me feel sick and I always started to feel itchy when I went in there, there were tanks around containing the dregs drained out of the “empty” drums and often they looked like fermenting beer with a nasty smelly scum on top! I am really glad I don’t have to go there anymore. It could easily have been the place where Del Boy tried to do his drum deals!
Just checked on Google Earth and the yard they were in is empty now so they probably got closed down!!

The sender has cut both ends off the oil drum to make an incinerator for his brother (who can’t be trusted with power tools)
