Is this for real, or just some fancy scam where you pay some third party for leads, and don’t actually get paid at all!?
Seems too good to be true. Would be a great job for a full timer/tramper tho if it were!

…So if I understand this correctly, what you do is pay some extortionate rate for a copy of this “handbook” that tells you pretty much to go cold-calling to pick up any courier work around the country, which 99% of the time no one will give you because they don’t know you from Adam. Because you are “warned” it is not a job, the conman is covered from any comebacks from being robbed of a score for a worthless pamphlet.
"Ten pound notes on sale for a fiver! - Order as many as you like!
Subject to availability. Add £20 for P&P. No refunds."
…Or… “HGV work! Get a well paid job! Send £19.99 for our address book of TOP CONTACTS that’ll always have work available.”
(Book turns out to be a Thompson directory, with the pages containing agencies you already know in it)
In my book, the biggest crooks in this entire equation are those paid advertisments that took money for such an ad to be posted on their site in the first place!
“I’d wipe my ar$e on the Sunday Sport, but I’m afraid of getting newsprint on my ring!”

Exactly!
£275 isn’t a lot if you have to run to S.W.England from Hartlepool. And if it’s self-emplyed,are they supplying the van?
If not, you’ve got to take all your running costs out of the £275 as well as your wages!
Even if you’re based in your home town, who’s to say you won’t be expected to travel across the country?
Scam
I looked into it a year or so back, it’s a scam to get you to buy a guide book for £25-30, I pulled out at that time. It just does really tell you to cold call and deliver lap tops around the country. Just call TNT Sameday, they’re always looking for couriers.

Wow! I was merely speculating!
I guess the con has to be pretty obvious though when one is asked for a cash payment to do a job that usually involves receiving wages instead… dang!
Scam or not ,the truth is as an owner driver with a van or car you need £175 wages plus £100 to cover fuel and wear and tear. The days of living on £500 a week as a self-employed man have now gone sadly. Problem is as soon as you find a reasonable earner for a days pay someone undercuts you.
Know in the courier business as “The Bible”
As you are self employed you will have all your cost to factor in as well as paying your NI & tax yourself which is poss more than you think
