Coupling reminder

I finished my temp contract at 3663 and I’m out looking for artic work now. Not ever going back to class2 multi-drop lol.

There is one thing I wanted someone to confirm for me since its been around 7 months since I drove an artic.

I remember the coupling procedure well enough to go and do it. I just can’t recall what position the 5th wheel handle needs to be in when coupling. Am I right in saying it needs to be fully extended, i.e. Open??

Also could someone give me a brief explanation of the difference between “fixed” and “sliding” 5th wheels? I learnt on a fixed one and have no idea what I do with the second shorter handle on the sliding wheels.

Ta very much! :stuck_out_tongue:

Hi anyone, Sorry for dumb question but could someone give me a help, Im due to strat work as a claas 1 driver, First job driving with No experiance. My job will be picking up all types of trailers and dropping them off. Can someone give me advise on the Trailer parking brake are they all in the same location or are they scatterd around? The only one I’ve ever used are the ones that are on the left side of the trailer just above the legs., All it was was a pully push it in to apply pull out to release brake was simple. thanks for any help.

Smudge it really depends on the make of trailer as to where the park brake is, like you said its either on the near side by where the legs are, at the rear on the nearside, or like on our fridge trailers its at the very front near the fridge controls

Thanks very much Mr Bluecity, I’m a little nervous, I’ve been told I will mainly be transporting continental trailers coming in from different ports. Also been told I need to learn how to use some kind of bracket for some trailers. Hope they give me training.

In which case you may find the winding position for the trailer legs will not be on the nearside.

If you have no idea what that handle does probably best to leave it alone, could be expensive. :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s for releasing the wheel so you can slide it but get things wrong and the railer headboard may try to join you in the cab. If you do need to move the 5th wheel best to ask and get someone to show you how it’s done. Much easier than tryingto understand written instructions on here.

that is why i was asking mate, i didn’t know if it played any part of the coupling process.

so with regarda to my original queation is it fully extended??

It only plays a part if you have to move the 5th wheel to either shorten the overall length because it is over or to increase the gap between the headboard and the rear of the cab. Yes fully out.

Thanks again for the help, Company have just called. I’m going out with another driver tomorrow to learn a few things, Thank god. Will let you know how it goes.

same as u smudge i have done very little coupling and uncoupling and have big fear of forgetting the trailor brake and getting crushed

Well let’s hope that doesn’t happen, Iv’e found it so hard for a company to even think about talking to me just because im 24, Luckily this company are good and giving me a chance starting tomorrow at 6.30am, Hopefully gonna learn a few things and get some confident back. Good luck not getting crushed.

you dont normally adjust the slider for most trailers, i would only check for a fridge or if it was a foreign trailer look under at the pin to see if there are two places to bolt it on, if it is on the rearward fitting you might be too tight behind the cab. always look at other same make trucks if they are pulling same make trailer as you. but above all else look dont just think it will be alright. also no proper driver will ever mind you asking questions no matter how daft it sounds to you.

Look for the red knob…and it’s PULL to park(to apply the brakes) and push to go.
There will probably be a black knob by the side of it which is the shunt button, just leave it be.

For the other driver worried about getting crushed,it is the FIRST thing I always check before hooking up…make sure the brake button is OUT and it may save you having to turn your pants inside out.

Hey guys just got back from my first day as a HGV driver, Iv’e got no driving experience at all and they chuck me on a fully loaded trailer 44t. I must admit I felt ok till I had to reverse haha was like Mr Bean all over the place in heysham port trying to park got there in the end, Any way There was no Trailer brake on the two I picked up today, The brake came off when I pulled the airline out, Thank the lord someone told me or I’d still be there now looking for it. Of out again tomorrow to wrexham looking forward to it, Thanks for the help guys.

If you connect the red line and everything starts rolling… :unamused:

Pull it out again and you’ll stop.

And remember to put the unit’s brake on next time…

The brake came off when I pulled the airline out

Other way around, surely. Pete

But smudge say s his trailer was the opposite he pushed it in to get the brakes engaged but presume its just a typo and all trailors are
pull to park
push to go

Sorry it was a typo error on my part for the trailer brake.
