The report also revealed that a third of the sector’s vacancies were described by employers as “hard to fill”
Increase the wages then retards. Jeez
“hard to fill” often isn’t about low pay - for it doesn’t explain fred bloggs preferring to work at the “yard down the road” for minimum wage, bearing in mind you’re not supposed to be able to be paid less than minimum wage…
Perhaps it’s a “crappy job” which pays higher than minimum wage, but most likely not high enough…
Let’s ask you all - How much would YOU up sticks, and go work for a multidrop outfit? £15ph? £18ph?
At present, even agencies are not letting drivers cherry-pick the work. I attempted to grab some £18ph stuff for multidrop london once, and got told “you can’t get that except on sunday nights” - I said “No bother, I’ll just work sunday nights!” I got told “Ahh… That’s actually the sunday night OVERTIME rate - you have to have done 40 hours monday-friday that week to get onto the cream stuff… You can’t just come in here and pick up the plum job straight out the gate”…
(Camera pans to Door flapping closed, as yours truly is already driving out of the car park onto the next firm to “try”…)
The article covers logistics and that will include managers, planners, clerks, warehouse pickers, loaders as well drivers. As the dCPC is now in place that must mean that the groups other than drivers have a lot of the people referred to by the comment…
The report stated: “Although the majority of employers consider their workforce to be proficient, some 67,339 logistics employees are regarded as not being proficient in their job roles, or as having skills gaps.
I know I have managed by people who demoralise and are downright dangerous. I have seen loaders who throw stock on and don’t restrain because they are chasing a bonus. I’ve seen planners allowing less than 2 hours to cover 140 Kms at 7/8 o’clock in the morning.
Then there is the cynic in me that sees the people who commissioned the report are UK Commission for Employment and Skills, a government body whose job is…■■? Oh yeah self preservation.
To use a Christine Keeler quote “They would say that wouldn’t they.”
the amount of hours and when they have to be worked will be the ‘hard to fill’ jobs
constant weekends, 5 over 7, varying start times etc
