Couldn't happen to a nicer company

Well, Mr. Jeffery… if it wasn’t for the fact that your company has a long history of paying crap wages and laying drivers off at the drop of a hat, perhaps you wouldn’t have a shortage. What goes around, etc…

With the amount of high unemployement in the Valleys this bloke needs to be serious. Pay decent money and less red tape for trainees they may come and work for him. Stobbies get abuse but their training school is good.

The unemployment in the Valleys isn’t down to a lack of jobs, but more down to a lack of willingness to get off benefits and give up smoking weed.

Just goes to show he has got away with being a "tin pot"outfit for so long he finds it difficult to understand why he cant get drivers. He needs to get out of the dark ages of paying RHA rates as was always quoted by Bosss back in the 60/70`s

Skid mark on the underpants of the haulage industry , hope he goes bust with the rest of them stobart etc

HERE HERE.

AMEN !!!

plenty of these companies up in Scotland, they’ll give you a decent unit and expect you to drive it for just over minimum wage. Drivers don’t seem to realise that it’s to save the company hard shoulder downtime / recovery, not because they rate the driver as anything more than the (un)reliable unit they’re driving.

Thing is he understands perfectly just like they all do(read what he says about drivers going to France instead), they just don’t want to give us decent jobs with fair pay & normal working hours.

The likes of Owens will never change. Set in their old ways. Instead of increasing wages and bettering conditions they want visas. He even mentions drivers leaving for bonuses. He says he has lost drivers, but won’t do anything to resolve it. All these big hauliers who are RHA members are all the same.

Harsh, but 100% accurate.

It’s fashionable, as you well know, to blame the deprivation and poverty in those areas on the closure of the pits; in reality it had been going on for years before then. Slowly getting better as people from Cardiff and Newport move up there because transport links have improved; but some of the natives will never change their ways.

They’ve spend decades undercutting the competition, and paying drivers peanuts (and treat them like ■■■■ in the process). The arrival of drivers from Eastern Europe was a godsend to them, a workforce even more willing to work stupid hours for even less (there’s a reason why John Raymond/Nolans, Skinned and Knackered , Perenium Freight, Mansel Davies etc are in business in South Wales…), they’ve become so arrogant, they think they have a God given right to cheap drivers. I’m not surprised that he’s crying for cheap import drivers, wages in Newport are now going over £15, and even in their own turf they have had to start offering over £10 per hour.

I might ring them again tomorrow, to ask about a job, ask about the wages, and start laughing to see how long until they hang up… :grimacing:

Newport is a good city. It’s just the minority that spoils it for the majority. Much the same in the whole of the UK. The hard working, law abiding people should benefit from being such that!

To be fair, it’s a bigger than average minority.

I listened to Ian Owen on BBC Wales news tonight,
It nearly broke my heart hearing how he has had to put the drivers wages as he puts it (through the roof). I feel so sorry for them having to at last pay drivers more money. It’s still below what the drivers deserve, having to put up with the “if you don’t like it, there’s the door” attitude from the management.
The clip on the news showed a clean canteen with a pool table, at the Lanelli headquarters, that must be for the warehouse boys, I can’t see them letting dirty stinking thieving drivers in there.
It’s a fact that in Bridgend the drivers are not allowed in the canteen, never any soap in the toilets, or toilet paper either. Yes, I feel sorry for him, having treated the drivers with utter contempt all these years it must be very difficult for him to put his hand in his pocket.
Think on Owens, your getting what you deserve. Paying the Polish £1000 a week via the IR35, and us getting £90 a day if we were lucky, minus our 45 minute break. You bunch of dossers.

I might ring them again tomorrow, to ask about a job, ask about the wages, and start laughing to see how long until they hang up… :grimacing:

That’s shocking if that’s true…
No wonder they can’t get any drivers :open_mouth:
