Could u still getto ur drop if ur sat nav stopped working

was at a job today tipping with another driver.guy who tipped on site u can go out other gate if u want turn left up to roundabout and turn left and up to a174 which would take uto a19.i already know this as id been wilton site many times and delivered in teeside many times over year.we was going to pollington to reload block.lad said ill ise satnav to guide me after loader had told us how to get out.
i asked him what he do if that packed in ohh ill use google on my phone and if that pack in u get ur map out.no i do not have one at all id parked up.i said what u dont a own a map at all what if gps was down and need to get somewhere or do a delivery ill park and wait why.said id got a map i do not really on sat nav at all to tell me how to get anywhere.will spend 10 mins looking where place is and how to get there.if i can see a better way in ill use that not why google tells me as thats what i use but only for lasy 10 mile or so if its a place ive never been.and if not fully sure ill stop before and check again to be double sure.how many can find places with out a sat nav at all and just a normal road map

Are you asking me or telling me?

Ummm, I can. I was a Surveyor in the army and used to to teach map reading. I´m covered
Having said that, I´d rather watch a 7" screen that´s telling me where to go.

Also maps dont show traffic.

BRB! Grandad wants to have a moan at me again about how everyone has gotten lazy because we use keys to start cars instead of hand cranks!!! MADNESS!! WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN THE STARTER GOES… kids these days…

Excellent point, young Padawan

I could but buggared if I’d use sat nav for last 10 mile…that’s where the A-Z Street atlas would come in! I always used to work backwards from the drop…find it in the A-Z, work back to a major road and make a note of route in from a particular junction…dig out the Road Atlas and route to the particular junction etc on that…write it all down and get going…worry about traffic later or not at all! We used to cover most of the country on multi drop (back in the early 90s) so getting from Oxfordshire to most major towns and cities was learnt quickly!

Eeeek, it´s the last ten miles that I would not want to be looking at a book for directions. You can´t just glance at a book and know which way to go. You can with a 7" screen, or bigger with a tablet.
I´ve done my time using A-Z books, ■■■■■■■■ to that, I´m getting teched up

Had a job today with no address on the collection notes(should have realised then this wasn’t going to be straight forward). So phoned the office for an address etc, got one.
Looked it up on Google and check the details. Put it in the sat nav and no route found so headed of in the general direction looking for the tell tale signs of lorry movement. Nearing a junction from map reading I’m thinking no way will I get down there then I notice a sign for said delivery. So of i go trundling down some country lanes in Ellesmere following the signed direction. See more signs for delivery so keep following, now it’s getting a bit hairy down these lanes and I see 1 more sign so off I go following it. I could litterly tap people on their heads it was that tight in this village. I ended up stopping and phoning the delivery place and asked for directions etc, he knew straight away where to send me but that turned into a red herring due to a low bridge so I went back round on myself through these country lanes again and back into the village then saw my sign again it’s then I realised after looking at my phone sat nav I noticed some scrote had turned the sign facing the wrong direction at the cross roads and that wasn’t the only one, found another a few miles up the road that pointed back in the direction I had just came from. Half an hour journey turned into 1 hour 45 minutes.
Gutted I fell into a trap, done it now and I wont do it again plus I couldn’t tip it(5 hour wait)as they were well behind so I had too leave as I would have ran out of time.
Bad bad day.

I used to co drive in a rally car, and then latterly, I did night events in a road rally spec car, and can plot a grid reference on an os map to within 50m.

Having said that, I find sat nav makes the job easier if you use it properly and not rely on it 100%, so do have a back up plan.

Ken.

I know this job has turned to ■■■■ with all the dumbing down,…but ffs :unamused:

If this actually IS a genuine question and not a ■■■■■■■■■ I think I’ll just send my licence back, buy a ■■■■ big bucket of marbles and sit in a corner naked and …count them, .

Finally heard everything.

Robroy,
I’m going to ask you to sit down so as you don’t fall down when I say that you have not as you quote “Finally heard everything”
Just 1 last pre warn, to sit down.
Here goes.
I’m an Hgv Driver and i,
DONT OWN A SAT NAV

If GPS ever went off line, I’d be too busy ovoiding every falling aeroplane and helicopters which would fall from the sky to be concerned with my drop.

I don’t use the sat nav for directions as such, only maybe one or twice a year, but i have it on ‘traffic’ all the time, and if traffic info goes down it’s quite an odd feeling not knowing which route to choose, so in some ways i’ve become reliant on the thing too :open_mouth:
My other problem is that i can’t abide the radio any more, apart from one station which is more or less useless for traffic announcements.

Seldom use a sat nav although I do have one, just in case my trusty AA truckers atlas fails, is it just me or do others find ■■■■ nave put doubt into your mind?..

I know plenty younger then me that would struggle to get out yard without one, I guess that’s the so called “snow flake” generation, many of those types also still believe in Santa, Bigfoot & dozy!!

Depends if I know where I’m going… obviously. As a rule if I’m loaded and running at 16 foot I’m meticulous in my planning. If I’m empty and running at 13’ 6 I’m a lot more blazé. Just use common sense. If I don’t like the look of a road I don’t go down it.

I’m all in favour of using modern technology to make life easier and was a reasonably early converter to using a sat-nav in a lorry, but if you can’t find your way to your destination without one you shouldn’t be driving large vehicles in my opinion.

There really should be a like button for posts like this, how on earth did we manage to find industrial estates all over the UK,remote villages in Europe (we didnt always deliver to large cities or towns!) or farms in the middle of nowhere?

Usually using the tongue and asking people worked quite well! ten months left and i will retire and count me marbles Rob!

I haven’t used a sat nav for the best part of 3yrs now and manage fine just using a road atlas. If I need to, I will scribble a few notes on a piece of paper so when I get close I’m not trying to look at the map.

Don’t get me wrong I use a sat nav myself now, albeit a basic car one, and to be honest I would not be without it, and why would I nowadays, no need to go back to those days you mention.
but …
the fact that the question needs to be asked, and/or was asked, just says it all imo. :unamused:

I didn’t say I looked at a book, I said write the route down and go…basic notes is all that is needed, as long as they’re legible…as for the satnav thing, take one into London or other major cities… most of the time they can’t keep up with vehicle speed/movements and before you know it, that roundabout you needed to take the 2nd exit then immediately turn left is suddenly a distant memory and while you curse the ‘tech’, you’re driving away blindly whilst your tech tries plays catch-up! There’s pros & cons to maps or tech but if someone is like our newest driver and wanted directions to Cannock (on his first ever run out) and didn’t know where Chieveley was from Reading and said the first thing he’d have to get is a sat nav, I like to think most of us over a certain age are pretty safe in our jobs if an employer asked us the same question as the thread title!
