Coronavirus & its consequences

Looking at https://www.flightradar24.com/ for Europe, most of the flights now look like freighters, private jets & light aircraft.

Gives an idea of how much air freight there is when it’s easier to see

Did you check the flight numbers over the States that are still flying?

David

Air Force one David ?

As GF has stated chilled/ short shelf life food distribution is prone to delays, either due to the supermarkets placing the orders late, delays in manufacturing or vehicle breakdowns.

Once sat in Milton Keynes with a double deck fridge trailer for three hours, waiting for a trailer to arrive from Thetford with product to be cross-docked, as I was last driver going back to Manchester. Went to close back doors and found I had one pallet with two layers of product on it. Had to keep it on limiter as there was a trailer waiting for it when I got back.

One consequence is the closure of car dealerships and I noticed this morning that the Jaguar / Land Rover forecourt of my local dealer had been completely cleared of cars. Must have been about 40 high value cars there so where they are storing them is anyone’s guess. The Ford forecourt next door (both dealerships are owned by the same company) was also less crowded, as was the Skoda place nearby. Maybe they were expecting thefts?

Also on cars, I normally go to the hand car wash every week, but not been for two weeks. Wonder if they will be in business when all this is over?

This panic buying thing?
I have been getting to the supermarkets as they open, so as to take advantage of the restocking?
Except there isn’t any restocking. The suppliers are saying that they are still producing the food, the Government have lifted restrictions on delivery’s at night and drivers hours? The Supermarkets have stoped 24hr shopping, so in theory the shelf’s should be groaning from restocking. Except they aren’t so if I’m first in how come the shelves are empty? Morrison’s Hinckley last Saturday, no milk, no anything?
Years ago, the Supply Chain Network we’re accused of being unable to cope, by the Government, this when we had a National Disaster Plan (Something that was scraped by the incoming government in 2010). They said they could, this before home deliveries were the big business they are today.
So why are the shelves not being filled?
You know if the customer walks into a store and sees nothing on the shelves, then the message that gets out, is the supermarkets can’t cope?
I don’t rule out panic buying, but am starting to believe that the Supermarkets are using it as a way of diverting attention from their incompetence?

A great topic, and interesting replies… until Carryfast sees it. :open_mouth:

Supermarket load volumes update.

Today’s RDC load total is quite a bit lower than last Saturday, which was exceptionally high even by the present standards. Today is still higher than for a “normal” end of March Saturday, but it’s more in line with the 25% daily uplift we’re currently experiencing. I did my own shopping at the local Sainsbury earlier, quite a strange feeling queuing to get in as numbers going in were controlled. One thing I did notice was a couple arriving in a car who got a trolley each and the man waited several minutes before joining the queue so that he was several people back from the woman. Either double buying or one was buying for an elderly relation??

ive played with that site for years though im sure if its military theres a 5 minute delay so you cant go up a mountain with a s.a.m and blast it.
whether its save the planet, fuel,or anything else, then with america its just another case of do as we say,not as we do.

I understand the folk are stocking up and by the time they want to use this food it’s out of date so it goes in the bin.The general public really don’t know what’s involved in getting stuff to the Super markets,it’s not like telling your kid’s to get the paper from the newsagents which is always on time.I dealt with a wholesale news agent and they met a van amongst other newsagents and picked up their needs at a Motorway point.I live opposite a post office and before they open a few are in line waiting for the shop to open so they can get their paper which I can hear sometimes ariving at the shop about 5 a.m.Alot of the public don’t realise the amount of work is involved in getting essentials to the shoppers.I didn’t know that the barcode also indicates the stock required for the next day or so.The general public think oh chuck it in one of these " big Lorries" and drop it off at the shops.
I think it would be a good thing to have a documentary for a few weeks on the television on this subject not that many folk will not want to watch as they’d sooner watch Holby City or match of the day. What could be a better time now the football has been banned.Walker’s crisps come into mind so why not Garry Linnekar ( spelling) doing the programe.
Oh and bread and milk are there unless some greedy ■■■■■■■ has decided to take their own bucket.!

BUYING for the elderly and vulnerable with a medical condition.
If any member of your family has had a letter from the N.H.S giving you a number as either of you are classed as vulnerable ie .CO.P.D.HEART problem CANCER treatment, any condition making you more vulnerable to your health via this virus an ongoing problem .

Sainsbury’s will eventually give you a home delivery slot once your number has been verified, they using the NHS site to confirm the number you have been given by the N.H.S that you are vulnerable. it has been done to weed out the chancers ,the 40-year-old 70s. done on the net at the GOV. web site.TO REGISTER.dbp

On a completely different note and as the other thread I instigated on TNUK has been demoted to some far away place very few ever visit and I am of course referring to the Brexit thread which now resides on the dark side in Bully’s, don’t know why as it proved intensively viewed and comments abundant ( rant over ) my point being that this Coronavirus just may be the catalyst that brings down the EU and Macron is the one who stated this, lets hope so as the unity that was the EU has certainly disappeared during these troubled times for us all and they are certainly not as one anymore, every cloud has a silver lining springs to mind, Buzzer

We tried that for my Mrs as we can’t get a home delivery until June at the earliest, despite having had one monthly for years, but they wouldn’t accept her on the Gov site so I go shopping weekly.

Pete.

Sorry to hear your having problems Pete ! We are not doing too bad here in Kendal as we were fairly well stocked up before the sunami hit and here in Kendal we have a number of firms that have switched from serving the hotel and pub trades to doing home deliveries. So we will be having a delivery of fresh veg, milk, eggs and bread etc. next week and our close family are looking after us with anything else we need. Otherwise we are staying locked down with fingers crossed !! Unfortunately it looks like it is going to get worse in the next couple of weeks or so ! Regards Dennis.

Dennis actually I was buying Ribeye steak for the drivers stuck at the yard on a break from there constant work some could go home but don’t want to risk it they all have been brilliant during this delivering Pharma & food to keep the country ticking over, as you know trucks & there drivers never get credit for there contribution at any time let alone in a crisis, many transport companies doing sterling work just now not just ours we are but a small cog in all this.
Good steering wheel attendants are hard to find today so you look after the gooduns where you can. While we are on the subject of not getting credit where its due the farmers need a pat on the back also, not easy as there is panic buying of foodstuffs in this sector as well but unless involved in the industry you would not hear about that. Today’s RDC totals update… slightly down on last Sunday, so it’s possible the way the supermarkets are managing their entry and exit queuing strategy might be having an effect. Some people might not be wanting to queue, but then again what is the percentage of home deliveries compared with people still visiting the supermarket?

Frozen groupage load totals for tomorrow and Tuesday… less than half the normal figure. Food serve companies supplying the catering outlets are doing very little business, which does in fact free off production capacity for extra supermarket orders.

I’m set up now with a company computer to work from home, which I will try for a couple of days at least this week. The computer doesn’t deal with my drivers though.

Hi mate are you getting any drivers not turning up for work ? just wondered as you have a lot under your control and I know from experience how it can throw a spanner in the works when this happens at short notice especially with timed deliveries, also are the RDC’s being a bit more sympathetic on time slots during this crisis, Buzzer.

^^^^^
I’ve had three drivers on 'fridge work self-isolated, one because he has underlying health problems and is at risk, two drivers because family members had Covid-19 symptoms. Of these one is already back at work and the second is back today. So far I haven’t had any last minute no-shows citing illness, but I do have a good and conscientious team of drivers at my depot.

Considering the extra volumes going into RDC then tipping times / delays are not much different to normal. If anything my night drivers on RDC work are getting their shifts finished a bit earlier than normal. That’s probably due to there being much less traffic on the road rather than what’s happening at the RDcs. The day frozen groupage delivery drivers are getting round noticeably quicker between delivery points because of quieter roads. One of them last week starting from Manchester did Carlisle, Morecambe, Preston and Accrington and when he pulled in the yard early afternoon I had to ask him if he had done all four drops. And he’d taken his full driving break at Killington Lake as usual.
