Coronavirus & its consequences

pete 359:
Hi all,
These are scary surreal times. In my home town on the sunny South Wales coast today,it was like a bank holiday, fairground open very busy, ques for chip shops etc.Great for traders, though am I wrong, saying it’s wrong? Afaiaa government advice was only essential travel.I think the government are doing all they can, though wouldn’t it pass more quickly and maybe less severe,if we all listened to them ? I’ve read that Germany has contained it very well by adopting this approach, fairly early on.Italy has a huge problem.
Regards Andrew.

What do you expect I always thought there was only sheep in Wales and your post has confirmed this belief, should have had an army scout car with a machine gun and felled them where they were, this is very irresponsible actions of people believing they are invincible, may they all be struck down, Buzzer

Wheel Nut:
I am really shocked to read some of these stories. Not for the UK Governments plan to fund the working class for months ahead, not for the tax breaks and mortgage holidays, but the sudden realisation that Chris Webb has lost his millionaire status on the IOM and all those dodgy neets have been squandered rather than squirrelled . On the plus side my wife and I will meet him in Spoons in Thirsk on the other side of this debacle.

We’ve all got a cross to bear Malc, back to poverty in Yorkshire then?
My dodgy neet out money was not squandered, all banked and gathering interest, such as it is,and all ready to spend in Thirsk - when we get there.
So no problem with me buying a round in Spoons int Market Place after this “unprecedented” situation has melted away, see thi in there then.

Reading in the paper the french minster macron impounded 3 trucks bound for U.K. with masks, and other stuff for the nhs one truck had sanitizer on his guards were told to impound as they needed the masks over there .till the U.K. intervened he reckons a mistake was made by his guards ,goes to show they would have stripped them trucks for themselves, yesterday by me on a lay by in Pyle 4 Asda artics parked up waiting to go to the store if this carry on we be going onto convoys next , the nhs when this is over should have funding put their way cut ministers pay in half and give it to the nhs

Knowing France well I can imagine then French government would try to get the kit for themselves-it really does do its best for French citizens, mostly placing them above other considerations. Thus the rapid repatriation of citizens around the world recently. Unlike our people in Peru… I wish our government did likewise for us all the time.

NHS funding. Yes, it must be reviewed and increased. But where will the money be sourced? It must be from us in increased contributions and, as I said in an earlier post in this thread, by those who can afford it (and I think most could afford a modest sum) contributing further when at the Docs or being treated. Why this instead of simply raising tax levels? Because it may cause people to think before they toddle off the Doctor and perhaps clog the system up un-necessacarily.

More funding? Yes.
Those who need to visit twice as often, need to pay twice as much? Crazy.
Do some visit for silly reasons? Yes, but in your suggestion, silly poor people would still abuse the system.
There may well be a problem with abuse of the system, but taking more money from sick middle income earners is not the way to go.
Those who have more money, pay more? Yes. that is what progressive income tax is for.
Also there is a public health issue here: if poorer people cant get ready care they delay early cheap treatments and end up needing expensive remedies later. Poor sick pay means some will be heroes and work on, doing further damage to backs and joints, ending up worse off and for longer. Yes, more funding, and unfortunately there will be some abuse, but that is the way of the world. Stopping some abuse by making more suffer and costing more overall isnt a good solution.

I see your point, but

The poorer long-term sick would not be expected to pay. Of course not. Simple. But those who can afford to contribute more should pay something-all in addition to increased contributions, again based on income.

I really do not think increasing funding for the NHS to the levels needed by modern medecine from increased general taxation (the rate of which is already based on income level) puts any sense of responsibility on the user. I think it should be discussed and sorted ASAP. Those serving in the NHS cannot be expected to prop it up for ever.

Perhaps that is enough of the political stuff…

OK, try to keep party politics quiet.
I do accept your point there is scope for abuse of the system of course, and agree it is a topic for detailed discussion, maybe elsewhere.

Just a quick un. Since the pub closures,as any of you noticed if the frequency of uncontrollable outbursts of crying has decreased ? No cheers Coomsey

There is worse to come:

Reading the above does not really surprise me.

People seem to be selfish and live only for the moment. Thus we have so many with zero savings, hoping that the government will pick up the pieces for them should things go wrong. In this instance I imagine they are thinking that the NHS will care for them should their foolish behaviour lead to infection-and they will not need to shell out another penny for the selfless, devoted treatment the NHS staff will give them. All this awful behaviour disgusts me.

Please, we the older (for the most part here) and, it really seems, the wiser can and should set an example in our behaviour in this crisis.

On another note am I the only one to note that spam on the internet seems to have dried up?

That’s because some selfish scrote has bought all the Spam!

Perhaps we should not joke about this virus as at the end of the day it is serious, just seen a teenager has it now so its not just the over 70’s that are at risk. On the news today national and local the public are not taking the advice of the government and are gathering in far too great a numbers so to bring this to the quickest closure I think we all better think again about the advice being handed out, our local Tesco got shut early today as things got out of control and this may lead to firmer control its just stupidity and greed, Buzzer.

I had a lovely workmate once in Brazil. His 18 year old daughter had been shot in the head at work where she was a cashier in a supermarket. It was robbed and for who knows what reason his daughter was shot in the head and was then a totally brain damaged young woman. Totally helpless and that will be for life.

But, and this is the point of my post, he also had a lovely 17 year old son, studying hard at school. a lovely lad. He was his only child now of whom he was very proud and for whom he had great hopes. One morning I got in to work to find the place was very sombre and this workmate devastated.

His lad had dropped dead in the street on the way to school. He had simply keeled over and died. it was subsequently found that he had an unsuspected heart disorder.

My point is that I reckon any one of the fools in our midst who are so stupidly carrying on as if nothing is wrong or think they are invincible might get one hell of a shock. All illness starts sometime, often long before there are symptoms. THEY may be in an at-risk group but do not know so. So whilst not only possibly acting as a vector for the virus and spreading it they may develop symptoms or catch it and get a surprise to find they were not as fit as they thought.

Remembering my friends grief I feel so very sorry for the 18 year mentioned above´s parents. I hope Boris starts getting a bit tougher with this.

our Customer has shut it’s doors to it’s 170 odd stores today :frowning:
luckily,i volunteered to go on nights delivering to Lidl stores for the rest of the week.

FFS if you cannot post something positive in these worrying times I suggest you crawl back down a disused tin mine and stay there for six months, remember you were the ■■■■■■ who went to the pub at lunchtime with your mates to avoid the crowds only a short time ago so you are obviously one of the irresponsible ■■■■■ who are not treating this with any seriousness, you are old enough to know better bloody disgraceful, Buzzer

From the BBC news site:

"Strict new curbs on life in the UK to tackle the spread of coronavirus have been announced by the prime minister.

From this evening people must stay at home except for shopping for basic necessities, daily exercise, any medical need and travelling to and from essential work.

Shops selling non-essential goods are being told to shut and gatherings in public of more than two people who do not live together are to be prohibited."

At last!!! It will not be easy, but needed to be done.
