Putting an extra vehicle on road in newyear I’ve been offered a reasonable deal on a new t range renault tag lift unit on contract hire over 2 years with a break clause after 9 months or buy an ex jenkinson tag lift 440 hiline. Euro6 bit of an unknown quantity or euro5 egr… Thoughts appreciated
buy
too many issues when returning a vehicle after contract ends, i looked at a brand new TGX XLX on a 2 year contract, and he told me that it would cost £8000 when i returned it to repair the damage
that was BEFORE i had even taken the truck from them
needless to say, i walked away from the deal without the truck

Somebody told you !!! Salesman say all sorts of b****t, much depending on what benefits them personally at the time.
I have leased or contract hired vehicles, not always from new, for the last 12 years and have never had return costs anywhere near that figure. Vehicle renters/leasers have a fair wear and tear policy, if you don’t look after the vehicle it will cost.I have always had any small repairs done before return and have been prepared to stand my ground if I do not agree with any charges.Excess mileage charges can be a problem if you underestimate on the initial contract.
The decision can only be made on individual circumstances, as a 2 vehicle family operation with no mechanical skills or facilities it is the only way that I will operate.
Stay away from the 440 scanny, they are piles of ■■■■,mate of mine has a 60 plate owned from new and he’s now replaced the fourth injector after 300 000ks,oil consumption fairly high too and that big turbo is mega bucks when (not if) it goes
Aw well god knows what to do I’m ideally lookin for a tag axle as I already have 2 of them and would like to keep eberything the same but it would appear finding a decent one is like rocking horse crap.
I’ve never contracthired before and in one way its good to have fixed costs but in another you pay all that money out and have nowt to show for it at the end…
Aaaaagh ma heids mince wi it all

Everybody’s circumstances are different and only you can decide but if the deal you have been offered is good and includes a get out clause after 9 months then I would think the only drawback would be the return condition. I would say it would depend on the quality of your drivers, not a problem to me as an OD.
If you can afford it, buy it!!

Hi, I can help out with a lease on the Renault or Scania, please feel free to pm me.
you need to do a detailed costing on buying and leasing before you make your decision, I had to do it the end of last year.
go to what ever manufacture you want and their sales will do you a costing based on buying and leasing.
some are more helpful than other I have to say.
what you have to remember that if buying as well as your repayments with the interest you will also need a maintenance costing either a R&M contract or if you service in house compare expenditure on your other vehicles over a set period.
as you said the good thing about leasing (I will say with the right deal) is your fixed cost over the period of the lease.
I managed to get a deal with Iveco on a 5 year lease, for the new hiway at £2075 per month, now that was for everything,
sprayed in our colours
ali wheels
light bars
wet pack
new fuel tanks (split for oil)
road tax
all servicing/mot/inspections
tyres(replaced when worn out or if punctured only pay a percentage i.e 50% worn pay 50% of new price)
just before we said yes they came back offering us a stralis the old shape as they had about 90 left unregistered for £300/month less
to be honest it was a no brainer took the deal.(which we can walk away from after 18 months with no penalties)
Now if we didn’t require the extras wet pack ect it would of been hell of a lot cheaper.
working out the figures on buying a new scania over the 5 years we saved over £30,000 on that period, even more if you take into account our normal vehicle replacement is a 7 year cycle, from purchase to replacement.(ok I know its not like for like)
Now if you can buy a vehicle and have £30,000+ left in it at the end over the period then buy, or have an extra £6000/year in your pocket then lease.
almost forgot as well when purchasing you have to find all the VAT in one lump sum, with leasing normally you have to put down one or two months up front.
the choice now is up to you
If you decide to buy Stobart are advertising trucks for sale in cm they had some tag axle scanias off the biomass fleet manual box wet kit etc.
Defo no T range renault as they have decided they won’t supply a tag axle on contract hire for sum reason… I called west pennine about 440 tags but they want 49500 plus 675 per month for r and m … Srupid money I think for a council specvehicle… Think I’m gona buy something although I might have to hire for a while til the right chariot comes along
