New laws come into force soon regarding vehicles being permanently insured. i.e. If there is a gap in insurance cover for your vehicle you can be charged with an offence, even if the vehicle is parked off road.
How much of a burden will this be to the lower income households who find themselves with a car they cant afford to even rest a vehicle up for a short while to save up for insurance?
You have a car that is coming to the end of its years insurance, you start shopping around and find that your premium is up by 40% what options have you got? you cant park it up nor drive it.
Like most things in life great if you are loaded ■■■■■ if youre not.

Pain in the arse, especially if you have a convertible or a motorcycle in the garage that only comes out on sunny days. No wonder people do not register vehicles or have proper insurance
Your slightly wrong.
You have to keep your vehicle insured unless you have notified the DVLA that it is being kept off road.
So if you have it parked outside your house and forget to insure it and forget to notify the DVLA then the rozzers will have the right to tow it.
The British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA), in conjunction with the DVLA and the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB), is reminding motorist that a new law, to be rolled out in late Spring, will mean that they must keep a vehicle insured unless they have notified the DVLA that it is being kept off-road.
Details of the new measures will be distributed with all V11 tax renewal forms from March, although guidance and a video are already available at direct.gov.uk.
BIBA’s head of corporate affairs, Graeme Trudgill, says: “Continuous Insurance Enforcement will help reduce the £500 million burden on innocent motorists caused by uninsured drivers, vehicle keepers should ensure they stay insured or SORN their vehicle if it is laid up.”
The MIB’s head of motor insurance database services, Neil Drane, adds: “The change in law is a stepping up of enforcement activity, so that not only those vehicles driven without insurance will be caught.”
‘Off road’ isnt enough it needs to be on your own property.
My M8 had his camper crushed even though it was sorn’d because the towing company said it was on council property (a patch of tarmac where the residents park). He couldnt afford the 400 quid release fee or the 600 quid insurance.

Declare SORN, park it up on private property and get a refund on any RFL left on it. Sorted.

That probably means the vehicle is a bit special or mean a lot to you so you probably want insurance on it at all times in case the garage goes on fire or some scroat breaks in and nicks it.

And if you dont have private property to park it on? or lets say its still taxed? your car will be crushed because its not insured.

I see your point but if you have an old knacker for winter as many do, and a sparkly shiny one for dry roads well secured in a brick building it should be safe.
My mate has two road legal Enduro bikes, a BMW Tourer and a 1958 Triumph Triton he is restoring after his brother died last year, he also has a car and a van to carry the bikes around. He can only ride one at once.
I just see the ones rubbing their hands in glee are Bennetts and Carole Nash, Oh! and the government of course.
I admire the fact that at last, someone has used joined up thinking by linking SORN to the MID
A bit like the Dunblane gunlaws, it will only affect the decent and honest folk.

Hi mate,
That’s not quite right, because:
Where a motor vehicle isn’t used on a road or other public place, there’s no requirement to purchase insurance cover for ‘on road risk’ as long as a SORN declaration has been made. The continuous insurance enforcement scheme is expected to come into force during 2011.

I agree it will only effect those are are doing it by the law and forget to insure or SORN a vehicle they aren’t using. The uninsured drivers it’s supposed to stop won’t care as they don’t care now. if thier car gets crushed they’ll go and get another motor and won’t bother to registar, MOT or insure it.
But then again if you have a few vehicles that you use from time to time, then they’ll all need to be road legal all the time. Or if you are planning to have one off the road, (a motorbike for winter say) then SORN it in October and re-tax and insure it in the spring, all legal no problems.
Bikes still get nicked from locked garages, and if it’s worth a few grand and not insured you’re left with quite a lot of money to replace it a lot of payments on a load is finance is still outstanding. My insurance company did a “winter” policy which basically insured you bike while locked in a garage. But I should still think you’d have to SORN it as it wasn’t RTA insurance.
Over here there is no such thing as a no claims dicount, having said that the most popular insurance is basic 3rd party, thats what you get unless you specify you want fully comp etc.
I own a Corsa 12 months insurance is £65 and as its the car thats insured not the driver, anyone can legally drive it providing they have a licence.
The thinking behind this reminds me of the debacle the government tried to introduce with compulsory registration plates for every vehicle.
It would have meant David Knight and Valentino Rossi would have to keep their number plates on while racing and Schumachers Ferrari would have had plates too.
The intention was to stop kids riding off road bikes down green lanes.
If your insurance expires and you still have the vehicle and haven’t SORN’d it then you will automatically get a fine.
They don’t need to see it or anything - it’s just a computer thing - No insurance + No SORN = Fine in the post - end of.
If you sell or scrap a vehicle just make sure you do the paperwork - If not then you will still get a fine in the post.
Hiya …this ruling has been talked about for the last ten years.it started out that all
vehicles must have a mot. this was defended by musiums with hundreds of motorcycles
saying the charge would put them out of business and bikes would be sold abroad.
this is when the sorn thing started. its all down to death dutyies tax. IE your dad had
a couple of vincents he paid 30quid for in the fiftys and now they can be worth 40 grand
each the govenment want some of the cake. there was a bugatti in the north east that
cost a chap 3 grand in the thirties it sold for 6 million+ last year the chap the car was left
to needed to pay3 million tax thats why the chancellor THINKS needs to know where all
the vehicles are…tax tax tax gimmy gimmy tax tax tax and it dose.nt matter whos running
this bloody island they want more
