continental express

my mate started for them on the understanding me and him would be a doublr man team.hes been there about 3 weeks now and is a bit disillusioned with them.they have a number 1 and a number 2 driver in each truck.hes been told it takes 12 month to be a number 1 driver so i cant go with him until then because there has to be a 1 and 2 (me being the 2)hes also been told he cant drive the truck on the mountain roads on the national 4 from madrid down south i think they are called the carolines until he has been there 12 months.both of us have been driving artics abroad for 27 years so i can understand him being disillusioned or are they winding him up.we were told we would be a team but they wont start me…!!!

its up to them who they employ not your mate.

it all just sounds like a load of ■■■■■■■■ #1 and #2 drivers    and what roads you can and cant drive. sounds like your better off out of it then.

As far as I am aware, yes Continental Express do use the N01 and No2 driver system - as much for anything else, with two blokes in the cab somebody has to be “in charge” otherwise mayhem could ensue.

As for not being allowed to drive through the Carolinas - he should sit back and enjoy the view, its fantastic but nigh on impossible to enjoy if youre driving.

For those not in the know the “Carolinas” is what Brits call the mountain pass through the Sierra Morena on A4 as it runs from La Mancha into Andalucia. In fact the correct name is “Dospenaperros” and the nearest village is Santa Elena - the name Carolinas is taken from the town of La Carolina some 10Km south on the Andalucian side.

The road itself through the pass is all dual carrigaway - however in places very narrow with several hairpins and some very steep hills, although in a Scania fully loaded 8th or 9th gear and lots of retarder and exhaust brake ensure that you can leave the pass with cold brakes.

Thier reticence to allow “new” drivers to drive through may be due to the constant accidents there - mainly trucks who are travelling too fast and go over the side, brake fires etc… Although Ive only ever seen the Spanish and Portuguese come to grief - usuallly the fridges for some reason running up or down to Almeria.

This may be something do with what happened to a Continental Express truck in 1999. Is was driving there on the N-IV when that driver overtook me and he went straight over edge. Since then I have imposed my own 50kph speed limit through that area and enjoy the outstanding views.

But now a days since the Los Barrios to Jerez autovia is complete, it’s just as quick or quicker to get to Algeciras/Gibraltar via the A66 (Ruta de la plata).

I have always avoided number one drivers and road foremen for that reason :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes, after 11 years it is finaly complete (except for the 4km near the A4 Jerez South junction).
The A66 (N630) from Salamanca to Seville is in the process of being upgaded with Caceras already by-passed. I have timed the two routes between Burgos and Algeciras and the A66 is 10 minutes quicker oppossed to going there via Madrid. The route via the A66 seems flater and more a relaible route as not many tourists will go that way.

What about Moroccans with overloaded Cortinas?

That’s the main reason I prefer running that route. No 38 ton transit vans go that way!
